Edinburgh Biodiversity Net Gain Consultant – Full Time, Permanent
About The Role
Pegasus Group, a leading development consultancy offering planning, design, environmental, economics, and heritage services across the UK, delivers sustainable, innovative, and high-quality solutions. As part of this visionary commitment, we are launching an in-house Nature and Biodiversity team and are seeking passionate and experienced professionals to shape our ecological consulting services.
We are now seeking to appoint Consultant Ecologists across our offices to design and implement ecological strategy and delivery, with a strong emphasis on Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) services. This role requires a strong ecological background, project management expertise, and the ability to thrive in multidisciplinary teams. You will work across high-profile projects, including sectors like infrastructure, energy, residential and commercial development, ensuring that ecological integrity aligns with commercial success.

Key Responsibilities
- Support ecological projects and manage key aspects across diverse sectors such as infrastructure, residential, commercial, and renewable energy.
- Plan and support a range of ecological surveys, including:
- Species diversity assessments (e.g., UKHab)
- Protected species assessments (e.g., Bats, Great Crested Newt, Hazel Dormouse)
- Environmental Impact Assessments (EcIA)
- Biodiversity Baseline Assessments
- BNG Metrics (Statutory Defra Metric)
- Site-specific conservation measures (HMMMPs/LEMPs)
- Provide ecological input into information apprenticeships (EIAs) and planning applications.
- Contribute to BNG (Biodiversity Net Gain) assessments and ensure compliance with regulatory frameworks and standards.
- Design and implement bespoke BNG strategies, prioritising:
- Onsite green infrastructure development
- Effective offsite BNG solutions
- Sustainable building integration
- Ensure strict adherence to wildlife legislation, conservation policy, and planning standards.
- Engage with clients in relationship building, repeat clientele acquisition, and referral generation.
- Provide inputs into tender submissions, project planning, risk assessments, and Method Statements (RAMS).

Requirements
Education & Qualifications
- Degree in ecology or a related environmental discipline.
- Professional membership or eligibility for Association status with the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM).
- Working (or starting to work) towards protected species licencing (e.g., Bats, Great Crested Newt, Hazel Dormoise).
Experience & Professional Competencies
- At least 2+ years of professional experience in the ecological sector.
- Strong knowledge of the UK ecology and conservation regimes.
- In-depth experience with Biodiversity Net Gain principles and application of statutory BNG metrics.
- Proven ability to deliver complex ecological assessments independently or within a project team.
- Excellent writing and communication skills to articulate findings and recommendations clearly.
