Ecological Consultant – WSP
About the Role
As an Ecological Consultant with WSP, you’ll be part of a large, friendly, and diverse team where collaboration, learning, and wellbeing are at the core of our culture.

Your role will involve:
- Hands-on experience across large-scale and complex projects
- Contributing to meaningful biodiversity outcomes and nature-positive solutions
- Exploring and developing your strengths in survey design, modelling, and ecologically advanced methods
- Working towards protected species licences and amplifying your impact at a landscape scale

Key Responsibilities
You will be involved in the following activities:
- Planning and executing ecology surveys
- Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs)
- Surveys for protected species
- Preparing deliverables, including:
- PEA reports
- Protected species survey reports
- Method statements and management plans
- Conducting Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments
- Collaborating with clients, project teams, and GIS specialists
- Applying the mitigation hierarchy to design mitigation, compensation, and enhancement measures
- Client liaison and project management
- Consultation and negotiation with regulators and stakeholders
- Mentoring junior team members
- Nurturing an inclusive and productive work environment
- Utilising generous training and career development budgets for in-house and external learning

Requirements & Qualifications
We’re looking for candidates who can demonstrate:
- Appropriate academic qualifications or equivalent experience in a related discipline
- Membership (or active pursuit of membership) with CIEEM (Chartered Institute for Ecology and Environmental Management)
- Proficiency in digital data collection tools (e.g., Coreo, Fieldmaps, Survey123)
- Professional experience in ecological consultancy or a regulatory environment
- Knowledge of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) principles and guidance, plus experience conducting BNG assessments
- Clear, accurate report-writing skills and the ability to produce robust ecological assessments
- Familiarity with relevant ecology policies and guidance
- Strong communication skills, with a problem-solving and proactive mindset
