Consultant Emergency General Surgeon
Consultant General Surgeon – Whole-Time or Part-Time Appointment (United Lincolnshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust)
Position Overview
- Location: Lincoln County Hospital & Grantham Hospital
- Structure: Core session (10 PA) or flexible part-time, making up a team of 12 Consultant General Surgeons
- Scope: Community of 450,000 across Lincolnshire, delivering hospital-wide general surgical services, including Emergency General Surgery
- Key Objective: Drive 18-week elective surgery targets, while extenuating support in national/regional audit commitments.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care
- Provide comprehensive general surgical services to Lincoln County Hospital’s primary, teaching, and satellite hospitals.
- Quantum/minimum workload may increase, subject to annual job planning review.
- Operate in emergency general surgery coverage to optimise countywide time- and service-delivery resilience.
- Actively contribute to clinical audit excellence:
- Mandatory attendance at Clinical Audit & Departmental Team Meetings.
- Full engagement in regional/national audits as required.

Training & Medical Education
- Commit to Postgraduate Medical Education role:
- Mentor Specialty Trainee (SpR) staff for General Surgery training.
- Teach residents in patient-centred, operation technical, and case-management scenarios.
- Collaborate in undergraduate medical teaching:
- Delivery of curricula aligned to Nottingham & Leicester Medical Schools for medical students.
Work Flexibility
- Default position: Competence paid at 10 PA (5 days/week).
- Additional payable activity (PA) reviewed via formal contractual adjustments to enable candidate’s authentic workload schedule.
