Job Summary
We are seeking an enthusiastic Consultant Gastroenterologist with a strong interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and/or Clinical Nutrition to support the continued development of our expanding Gastroenterology service. The successful applicant will play a key role in delivering and developing specialist IBD and/or Clinical Nutrition services, provide clinical leadership within the multidisciplinary team, and contribute to innovation, service improvement, and research across University Hospitals Birmingham. Applicants with expertise in bowel cancer screening are also encouraged to apply.
Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required
The post holder will be responsible, alongside consultant colleagues, for delivering high-quality secondary and tertiary gastroenterology services across the Heartlands and Solihull sites. The successful applicant will complement the existing subspecialty expertise within the department while contributing to the delivery of high-quality general gastroenterology, endoscopy, and inpatient services.
The final job plan will be agreed upon appointment; however, the successful candidate will be expected to undertake a combination of general gastroenterology outpatient clinics, inpatient ward cover, endoscopy sessions, and participation in the Gastrointestinal Bleeding (GIB) On-Call rota.
The successful applicant will be encouraged to develop and enhance a subspecialty interest, with a particular emphasis on Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and Clinical Nutrition. They will work closely with the established multidisciplinary team, including specialist nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, surgeons, and allied health professionals, to support the continued development of specialist services, improve patient pathways, and deliver high-quality, evidence-based care.

Job Description
Depending on the needs of the department and the successful applicant's interests, the job plan may include elements of flexible working or annualized sessions.
- To contribute to the delivery, development, and continuous improvement of specialist gastroenterology services, with a particular focus on Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and Clinical Nutrition, while supporting other areas of subspecialty practice as required.
- To deliver high-quality, patient-centred care through an average of 2 - 3 endoscopy sessions per week, including diagnostic and therapeutic procedures appropriate to the post holder's expertise.
- To undertake an average of 2 - 3 outpatient clinics per week, including specialist IBD and/or Nutrition clinics where appropriate.
- To participate in the consultant rota for inpatient gastroenterology and hepatology services, providing high-quality care for patients with acute and complex gastrointestinal disease.
- To participate in the emergency Gastrointestinal Bleeding (GIB) On-Call rota.
- To work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams, including specialist nurses, dietitians, surgeons, radiologists, pharmacists, and primary care colleagues, to deliver integrated patient care.
- To provide specialist advice and support to colleagues across primary and secondary care.
- To contribute to service development, clinical governance, quality improvement, audit, and the implementation of evidence-based practice.
- To support undergraduate and postgraduate education and contribute to the training and supervision of junior doctors and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
- To work in accordance with agreed clinical pathways, national guidance, and Trust policies, maintaining the highest standards of patient safety and clinical governance.

Qualifications
Essential
- Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise
- Entry on, or eligibility for entry onto, the GMC Specialist Register in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine (or equivalent) by the date of appointment
Disclosure and Barring Service Check
