Consultant Histopathologist – Urology Insourcing Opportunity
This is an insourcing opportunity for experienced Consultant Histopathologists to temporarily support a large NHS Cellular Pathology service in the East Midlands. The Trust is facing reporting capacity pressures, particularly in urology pathology.
Currently, the Trust is exploring ways to increase reporting capacity and is evaluating a prospective service model. Potential engagement would be subject to service confirmation and formal approval.
This opportunity is an output-based insourcing model, as opposed to a traditional locum role.

Key Responsibilities
- Reporting histopathology specimens on-site using glass slides
- Specialisation in urology, including:
- Prostate biopsy templates
- Radical prostatectomy specimens
- Adherence to Trust governance and quality frameworks
- Maintaining agreed turnaround times and reporting standards
Indicative Activity
- Approximately 120 prostate biopsy templates per month
- Around 20 radical prostatectomy cases per month
Essential Requirements
- Current GMC registration with an active licence to practise
- Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register for Histopathology
- Substantive NHS Consultant Histopathologist appointment (current or recent)
- Significant independent experience reporting urology specimens
- Strong understanding of NHS governance and quality frameworks
- Active participation in relevant Histopathology External Quality Assurance (EQA) schemes
- Ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and appraisal/revalidation compliance

Desirable
- Previous insourcing experience
- Capacity to undertake regular additional reporting sessions
- Experience in supporting backlog reduction initiatives
Additional Information
- On-site reporting only
- Glass slide environment (digital pathology not available)
- Currently at expression of interest stage
- No guarantee of final engagement; subject to service approval, contract award, and clinical governance clearance
Flexible sessional commitment available for short-term or ongoing support.
