Consultant in Clinical Oncology
Consultant Clinical Oncologist - Thoracic & Urological Malignancies

About the Role
The consultant clinical oncologist will specialise in thoracic and urological malignancies, with possible interest in upper gastrointestinal cancers. Experience or enthusiasm for teaching and staff training isadvantageous.
This role supports Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB), Wales’s largest health organisation, serving North Wales via a network of hospitals, clinics, and community services.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
- Deliver specialist oncological services across north Wales, focusing on agreed subspecialties (negotiated job plan includes thoracic and urology).
- Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams (MDTs), participating in site-specific meetings.
- Balance research or teaching under existing links with Bangor and Wrexham Universities.
- Support evolving transformation in the consultant-led integrated oncology service, adapting to new appointment initiatives.
- Develop tailored patient pathways, clinical protocols, and audit frameworks.
Core Duties
Patient Care & Team Collaboration
- Provide specialist oncological input for common cancers and subspecialties.
- Work seamlessly with consultant colleagues to ensure continuity of care across disciplines.
- Support oncology, haematology, and palliative care teams in inpatient patient care.

Research & Education
- Foster a research interest, including clinical trials and collaborative studies.
- Contribute to audits, teaching sessions, and continuing medical education (CME).
Service Development
- Partner with managerial and clinical staff to refine care pathways and protocols.
- Encourage clinically effective, evidence-based practices.

Person Specification
Essential Qualifications & Clinical Experience
- Full GMC registration
- MB ChB or equivalent
- MRCP or equivalent
- CCT in Clinical Oncology confirmed by date of Appointment Authority Confirmation (AAC)
- Inclusion on Specialist Registrar (or eligible within 6 months if in training)

Desirable Additional Qualifications
- Higher degree (Masters or PhD)
- Leadership experience in patient care/directorships (clinical/academic/managerial)
- Clinical governance experience
Essential Special Knowledge & Skills
- Training post experience at spR/SR level (or equivalent via Royal College/GMC approval).
- Teaching & clinical audit experience.
- Ability to educate and train junior staff.
Personal Skills & Qualities
- Strong interpersonal skills with patients, relatives, and colleagues.
- Proven ability to build confidence and trust rapidly.
- High tolerance for pressure and change.
- Exceptional communication skills.
Desirable Traits
- Leadership skills in multi-professional teams.
- Proficiency in research publication and/or research supervision.
