Consultant in Clinical Oncology

Consultant Clinical Oncologist – Thoracic and Urological Malignancies

Job Overview

The post holder will specialise in thoracic and upper gastrointestinal malignancies, preferably with a keen interest in teaching and staff training. Opportunities for research and/or teaching exist, supported by established links with Bangor and Wrexham Universities.

The selected candidate will play a full role in the consultant-led integrated specialist oncology service across North Wales, adapting to service evolution as new consultant appointments develop. The position includes a negotiated Job Plan covering thoracic and urological malignancies.

Key activities include:

  • Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) for patient management, audit, and pathway development.
  • Engaging actively in site-specific MDT meetings.
  • Supporting other clinical, medical professional, and managerial colleagues to ensure high-quality healthcare for Health Board patients.

Main Duties and Key Responsibilities

Clinical Services & Collaboration:

  • Deliver specialist oncological care across common cancers and agreed subspecialties.
  • Ensure seamless cancer care collaboration with clinical consultant colleagues.
  • Facilitate cross-disciplinary patient transfers and pathways.
  • Work with Oncology, Haematology, and Palliative Care teams for inpatient oncology coverage.
  • Develop a specialist research interest, including clinical trials in national/international studies.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications & Clinical Skills

  • Full GMC registration
  • MB ChB or equivalent
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Completion of CCT in Clinical Oncology (or equivalence confirmed by GMC by date of appointment).
  • Included on the Specialist Register, or eligible within six months if still in training.

Special Knowledge & Experience

  • SR/SpR-level training experience equivalent to Royal College/GMC standards.
  • Teaching and clinical audit experience.
  • Skilled in educating/training junior medical staff.

Personal Qualities

  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills with patients, relatives, and team members.
  • Can in builds trust quickly and manages pressure.
  • Exhibits flexibility and leadership ability.
  • Exceptional communication and remote verbal/written skills.

Research

  • Published research experience.

Desirable Criteria

Qualifications & Experience

  • Higher degree or research qualification.
  • Leadership in training and directing medical/nursing professionals.

Skills & Diverse Engagement

  • Experience in clinical governance.
  • Ability to lead and participate in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated OKT or OSCE competencies (if applicable). (Oral Knowledge Test/Oral Scenario-based Curriculum Engagement)

Research

  • Research degree or studies.

Technology & Mobility

  • Strong IT/computer skills.
  • Proficient at traveling efficiently between service locations.
