Consultant in Forensic Psychiatry – Ty Llewelyn Mental Health Unit, Bangor
Job Overview
There has never been a better time to join our growing team in the Mental Health and Learning Disabilities Division.
With a new leadership team in place and a commitment to investment, we are transforming service delivery across North Wales. This includes establishing new roles within our community and inpatient teams, as well as offering clear career progression for staff.
As part of our expansion, Betsi Cadwaladr University Local Health Board is seeking to appoint a Consultant in Forensic Psychiatry to work within Ty Llewelyn Mental Health Unit, Bangor.
Main Duties
This role is integral to the ongoing development of forensic mental health services, ensuring sustainable specialist care for the population of North Wales.
As the holder of this post, you will:
- Provide overall psychiatric care for an inpatient population within medium secure services.
- Support medical leadership, along with colleagues in the multidisciplinary team, in delivering assessment, management, and supervision for:
- Inpatients
- The broader forensic mental health service, including prisons and the community forensic mental health team.
- Contribute to shaping the future of forensic psychiatry in North Wales through collaborative leadership.

Qualifications and Eligibility
Essential Criteria
- Full GMC Specialist Registration (or within 6 months of obtaining CCT from date of interview).
- 12/2 Approval or AC Approval (or eligible for approval).
- MRCPsych or relevant qualification approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
- Approved under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act (or able to achieve this within 3 months of appointment).
- Approved Clinician status (or able to achieve this within 3 months of appointment).
Desirable Criteria
- Forensic CCT ( Certificate of Completion of Training).
- Postgraduate qualification or higher degree in:
- Clinical research
- Medical education
- Healthcare management
- Welsh AC (Appropriate College) approval.

Skills
Essential Criteria
- Evidence of training in core and specialist competencies for forensic psychiatry.
- Strong general medical skills.
- Experience in leading a multidisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated leadership skills.
- Ability to work under pressure.
- Excellent communication skills (written, oral, and interpersonal).
Desirable Criteria
- Evidence of building strong relationships with service users.
- Evidence of promoting collaboration within teams.
Teaching and Training
Essential Criteria
- Experience in delivering postgraduate teaching.
- Experience in delivering multidisciplinary teaching.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience in teaching medical students.
Research and Audit
Essential Criteria
- Proven ability to initiate and conduct original research.
- Demonstrated experience in undertaking relevant audit projects.
Desirable Criteria
- Research experience in forensic psychiatry.
