Job Overview

We’re continuously developing and expanding the range of support, care, and treatment we offer to people across North Wales. This includes establishing new roles in our community and inpatient teams, while providing a clear pathway for staff to learn and progress throughout their careers.
Betsi Cadwaladr University Local Health Board (Betsi Cadwaladr UHB) is currently recruiting for the role of Consultant in Forensic Psychiatry based at Ty Llewelyn Mental Health Unit, Bangor.
This is a replacement post and forms part of the commitment to developing and strengthening forensic services for the population of North Wales. The post holder will be responsible for providing overall psychiatric care of an inpatient population within the medium secure services.
In collaboration with colleagues from the multidisciplinary team, you will provide medical leadership, conduct assessment and management of inpatients, and contribute to the wider responsibilities of the local forensic mental health service, including work with prisons and the community forensic team.
Responsibilities
Key functions of the role include:
- Clinical leadership: Taking overall responsibility for the psychiatric care of an inpatient population within medium secure services.
- Forensic service provision: Working with multidisciplinary teams on inpatient, prison (OFS and IPS), and community-based assessments and management plans.
- Service development: Supporting the continuing development of forensic mental health services across North Wales.
- Collaborative practice: Engaging effectively with multi-disciplinary teams, service users, carers, healthcare professionals, and other agencies.
- Education & training: Providing postgraduate teaching and multidisciplinary training within the institution and, if appropriate, regionally.
- Research & audit: Supporting and undertaking research, clinical governance, patient safety, and audit activities.
- Professional accountability: Member of the UK Consultant Contracts and Terms of Service with responsibility for ensuring the standards of care provided meet the requirements of clinical governance and quality improvement frameworks.

Person Specification
Qualifications & Eligibility
Essential Criteria:
- Full GMC Specialist Registration (or within 6 months of obtaining CCT from date of interview)
- 12/2 Approval (AC Approval) or eligible for approval
- MRCPsych qualification or equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists
- Section 12 (S12) Approval Status Active or ability to secure within 3 months of appointment
- Approved Clinician status, or the ability to achieve this within 3 months of appointment
Desirable Criteria:
- Forensic CCT
- Postgraduate qualification or a higher degree in medical education, clinical research, or management
- Welsh AC Approval

Skills
Essential Criteria:
- Evidence of specialist forensic psychiatric training (core and advanced competencies as per Forensic Psychiatry curriculum)
- Demonstrated competence in leadership and management of complex multidisciplinary teams
- Strong leadership ability for managing both inpatient and outpatient services
- Experience showing resilience and the ability to work under pressure
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
Desirable Criteria:
- Evidence of developing and maintaining effective collaborative relations with service users, carers, and relatives
- Ability to establish trusting working relationships with colleagues across multiple sectors
Teaching & Training
Essential Criteria:
- Experience providing postgraduate teaching
- Evidence of delivering multidisciplinary teaching and education
Desirable Criteria:
- Previous experience in teaching medical students
Research & Audit
Essential Criteria:
- Proven ability to initiate and conduct original research or high-quality audits
- Evidence of engagement in relevant audit activities
Desirable Criteria:
- Published research (or registrations in development) in forensic psychiatry
Motivation & Attitude
Essential Criteria:
- Commitment and enthusiasm for developing and delivering forensic psychiatry services
- Demonstrated capability to work effectively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
