Consultant in Gynaecology

About the Role

We are seeking to recruit a gynaecologist to strengthen our gynaecology team in preparation for the opening of our new surgical hub, providing efficient and high-quality care to women living across Wakefield and North Kirklees.

Our Facilities

We have state-of-the-art hospitals at Pontefract and Wakefield, including a New Surgical Hub with dedicated Gynaecology Services at Dewsbury Hospital. Within our Gynaecology Services, we offer:

  • A BSGE Regional Endometriosis Centre
  • Dedicated Gynaecology Assessment Unit in Pinderfields
  • Outpatient clinics for:
    • Menopause
    • Colposcopy
    • Urogynaecology
    • Endometriosis
    • Hysteroscopy
    • Minor procedures
    • Post-menopause bleeding
  • A Gynaecology Oncology Unit (in collaboration with Leeds Teaching Hospital’s oncology teams)
  • Elective surgery at Pinderfields and Dewsbury Hospitals, including access to Da Vinci Robots on both sites
  • Elective Obstetric Suites in Pinderfields Hospital

Main Duties

The key responsibilities of the role include:

Clinical Duties

  • Conducting General Gynaecology Clinics (9.00–13.00/13.30–17.30)
  • Active participation in regular Gynaecology day-case and inpatient operating lists, ensuring continued emergency gynaecology skills
  • Undertaking Saturday ‘hot week’ cover, providing acute gynaecology care (08:00–18:00 hrs, Monday–Friday, 1.5 shared paid afternoons), including ward rounds
  • Conducting consultant pre and post-op ward rounds allocated in the DCC (annualised)
  • On-call duties (Gynaecology-only) shared with 14 colleagues, typically on a 1:8 basis:
    • Weekday on-call: 17:30 hrs (until 08:00 hrs) off-site
    • Weekend on-call: 08:00–11:00 hrs (on-site, mainly non-patient-facing duties on a post-call day) (On-call duties for Gynaecology only are paid at Band A.)

Administrative and Professional Activities

  • Assisting with administrative duties (backed by office space and secretarial support)
  • Allocating the DCC (Diagnostic & Clinical Coordination) for MDTs (multi-disciplinary team discussions) with annualised hours
  • Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs) as per the Trust Framework, with a minimum of 1.5 SPAs in the core 10PA timetable, plus additional commissioned time if warranted by specialist skills or service requirements.

Multidisciplinary Service Offerings

MY Team has an established service for managing complex gynaecological surgery, including:

  • The largest BSGE Regional Centre for Endometriosis in Yorkshire
  • Tertiary-level sub-specialty urogynaecology surgery services
  • Clinical collaboration on gynaecology cancer cases with Leeds Teaching Hospitals

Applicants must fulfil the following essential criteria:

Professional Requirements

  • Full GMC Registration with an active licence to practise
  • Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register, or within 6 months of obtaining CCT (Certificates of Completion of Training), CEFR (Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration), or equivalent qualification
  • Medical Degree from a recognised medical school
  • Evidence of MRCOG (Member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists) or equivalent certification
  • Eligibility to work in the UK

Clinical Experience & Skills

  • Accreditation for benign abdominal surgery (open and laparoscopic methods), or equivalent recognised training to be seconded to a college representative
  • Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in gynaecological services
  • Confirmed experience in Gynaecology with a proven track record
  • Ability to share responsibility for day-to-day management of the service amongst colleagues

Teaching and Training Mandates

  • Commitment to teaching and mentoring young juniors, medical trainees, and students

Governance and CME Responsibilities

  • Active participation in departmental and Trust Clinical Governance matters
  • Audit obligations, including managing participation in continuing medical education (CME)
  • Evidence of an analytical approach to problem-solving and strong time management skills

Operational Competencies

  • Computer literacy
  • Proven track record in organising and directing outpatient clinic schedules, theatre lists, and departmental workflows
  • Experience or commitment to developing audit protocols
  • Compliance with NHS performance frameworks and service delivery targets
  • Ability to manage and empower junior staff effectively

Soft Skills & Professional Engagement

  • Clear, effective communication skills when interacting with both staff and patients
  • Showcase of flexibility, adaptability, and attention to physical stamina to meet role demands
  • Willingness to integrate locally into hospital workflows, systems, and prove competency in policy adherence
  • Verifiable disclosure and barring (DBS) check clearance
  • Ability to contribute independently and collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team
