An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Infectious Disease and Medical Microbiology to join a well-established multidisciplinary microbiology and infectious diseases service in the East of England.
The successful candidate will provide specialist expertise in clinical microbiology, infectious diseases, virology, infection prevention and control, and antimicrobial stewardship. Working within a collaborative pathology network, the post holder will contribute to the delivery of a comprehensive diagnostic and advisory service across multiple healthcare sites while supporting service development, education, research, and quality improvement.
The role also includes participation in a shared out-of-hours consultant rota, providing specialist microbiology and infectious disease advice across the regional pathology network.
Main Duties And Responsibilities
- Provide a comprehensive clinical microbiology and infectious diseases service for hospital and community healthcare providers.
- Deliver specialist clinical advice on the diagnosis, investigation and management of infectious diseases.
- Provide expert microbiology, virology and infection prevention and control advice to clinicians across multiple specialities.
- Participate in the regional consultant on-call rota, providing out-of-hours microbiology and infectious disease support.
- Support infection prevention and control services, including cross-cover responsibilities when required.
- Contribute to antimicrobial stewardship initiatives to promote safe and effective antimicrobial prescribing.
- Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, including clinicians, pharmacists, infection control practitioners, laboratory scientists and public health colleagues.
- Participate in multidisciplinary meetings, clinical case discussions and regional microbiology forums.
- Support laboratory governance, quality assurance, UKAS accreditation standards and service improvement initiatives.
- Supervise and support speciality trainees, biomedical scientists, clinical scientists and other healthcare professionals.
- Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes.
- Participate in clinical audit, quality improvement, clinical governance and appraisal activities.
- Support research, innovation and evidence-based practice within microbiology and infectious diseases.
- Contribute to service planning, leadership and the ongoing development of regional microbiology services.

Person Specification
Qualifications & Registration
Essential
- MBBS, MBChB or equivalent medical qualification.
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise.
- FRCPath or equivalent higher specialist qualification in Medical Microbiology or Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases.
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Medical Microbiology or Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (or eligible within six months of interview).
- Evidence of ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and participation in appraisal.
- Minimum 1 year of NHS experience.
Desirable
- MRCP or equivalent postgraduate qualification.
- Higher academic qualification such as MSc, MD or PhD.
- Diploma or additional qualification in Infection Prevention and Control.
- "Teaching the Teachers" qualification or equivalent.
Experience
Essential
- Training and experience equivalent to that required for FRCPath.
- Extensive experience in Clinical Microbiology, Infectious Diseases and Infection Prevention and Control.
- Experience providing specialist microbiology consultation services to hospital and community clinicians.
- Experience in antimicrobial stewardship programmes.
- Experience teaching undergraduate and postgraduate healthcare professionals.
- Experience participating in clinical governance, audit and quality improvement.
- Competent IT and electronic clinical systems skills.
- Training and expertise in safeguarding children.
