Job Overview
We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Consultant Psychiatrist to join us, forming part of a high-calibre consultant peer group in the heart of London and working in an established multidisciplinary Community Mental Health Team in Westminster.
You will be working closely with Inpatient Consultant Psychiatrists colleagues in the Service and members of the OPHA/HTT multidisciplinary team Key interfaces are with older adults’ inpatient mental health services, Primary care networks, supported accommodation provisions, A & E Liaison, MHCAS (Mental health crisis assessment service), GPs and the police.

Main duties of the job
- Provide senior medical responsibility for the assessment and management of patients in the team.
- Act as Clinical supervisor to post graduate medical trainees and the Specialty doctor in the team.
- Provide oversight of and contribution to robust care planning, risk assessment and risk management processes.
- Support recruitment and ensure optimal retention of team members and uphold morale.
- Ensure good service quality and performance.
- Ensure training needs of psychiatry trainees and medical students are met as well as supporting training of other junior clinical staff.
- Ensure own CPD.

Community mental health services in Westminster are structured into two integrated Mental Health Hubs (North and South), which together provide borough-wide coverage. Each hub supports the full continuum of mental health need, from early intervention and brief input through to the care of people with complex and enduring difficulties.
Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
CLINICAL DUTIES
The post-holder will have consultant clinical responsibility, leadership and expertise for catchment area patients referred to the Westminster Older People and Healthy Ageing CMHT. He/she will be expected to assess, follow up and carry a case load of the most complex cases referred to the OPHA CMHT & HTT. The post holder will support multi-disciplinary working in all aspects of patient care. Westminster OA HTT gatekeep Kershaw (on both Kershaw and 3BP) and Redwood ward inpatient beds for Westminster patients. They contact the ward to request a bed for admission. The post holder will provide consultant input into relevant clinical decisions involving bed flow and bed management. He/she will provide clinical expertise to help support and develop the provision of community mental health services for older people in Westminster. He/she as the clinical expert will play an active role in developing and realising the strategic direction of the service He/she will support the service manager in the management of the service. He/she will audit clinical activity and lead quality improvement work leading to more effective and better quality as well as targeted services.

GENERAL DUTIES:
- To manage, appraise and provide professional supervision to junior medical staff as agreed with the medical director, during cross cover and in accordance with the Trust’s policies and procedures.
- To ensure that junior medical staff working with the post holder, operate within the parameters of the New Deal and are Working Time Directive compliant.
- To respond to exception reports submitted by trainees in a timely manner.
- To undertake administrative duties associated with the care of patients.
- To record clinical activity accurately and comprehensively and submit this promptly through the trusts clinical information systems.
- To participate in service and business planning activity for the locality and, as appropriate, for the whole mental health service.
- To participate in the annual appraisal for consultants.
- To attend and participate in the academic program of the Trust, including lectures and seminars as part of the internal CPD program.
- To maintain professional registration with the General Medical Council, Mental Health Act Section 12(2) approval, and to abide by professional codes of conduct.
- To work with local managers and professional colleagues in ensuring the efficient running of services, and share with consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management.
- To comply with the Trust’s agreed policies, procedures, standing orders and financial instructions, and to take an active role in the financial management of the service and support the medical director and other managers in preparing plans for services
- To be flexible and willing to undertake duties according to the needs of the service, including representing the service at the Directorate strategic meetings if needed.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Primary Medical Degree
- Full GMC registration
- Section 12 MHA Approved
- Approved Clinician
Desirable criteria
- Post graduate qualification of relevance to Old Age specialty
- Inclusion on the specialist register as an older adult psychiatrist
- MRCPsych OR MRCPsych equivalent
Skills, Abilities & Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of assessment and treatment of mental disorders (functional and organic) in older people in either community, day hospital, in-patient and / or liaison settings
- Experience of working in specialist multidisciplinary teams
- Experience of CPA approach, and partnership working with colleagues in health (primary and secondary), social care and voluntary services.
- Proficient in risk assessment and management
- Experience and training in health service management
- IT skills
- Evidence of completed clinical audit projects
- Evidence of undergraduate and postgraduate trainee teaching
- Experience of service development/business planning
Desirable criteria
- Placement in general practice/Geriatric Medicine
- Completed research projects
- Publications in peer- reviewed journals.
- Experience of memory service management
- Experience of teaching non- medical staff/carers
TRAINING
Essential criteria
- CCT in psychiatry (or CCT expected within 6 months of interview date)
