Who can apply
We are looking for Consultant Psychiatrists who:
- Hold (or are eligible for) GMC Specialist Registration
- Are Section 12 approved and Approved Clinicians (or able to achieve this within three months)
- Have excellent knowledge of adult mental illness and psychiatric emergencies
- Enjoy working across physical and mental healthcare settings
- Are passionate about collaborative, person-centred care and service improvement

The Role
As a Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist, you will provide expert assessment, formulation, and treatment planning for adults referred from the Emergency Department (ED) and inpatient wards.
Key Responsibilities
You will:
- Lead daily handovers, referral triage, and complex case discussions
- Deliver specialist psychiatric assessment and collaborative care planning
- Manage presentations involving:
- Mental illness
- Neuropsychiatric conditions
- Addictions
- Functional disorders
- Support multidisciplinary, multi-agency working across hospital and community services
- Supervise resident doctors and teach medical, nursing, and paramedic students
- Provide education and support to acute hospital colleagues
- Contribute to service development, clinical leadership, and innovation across Sussex liaison services
This is a varied and intellectually stimulating role, where no two days are the same.
About the Service
Based within the Mental Health Liaison Team at Worthing General Hospital, you will work alongside:
- Specialist Liaison Nurses
- Rotational Doctors
- Acute Hospital Teams
- Community Mental Health Services
- Primary Care and wider partner organisations
The service supports adults aged 18+ presenting with complex mental and physical health needs, delivering timely specialist assessment and intervention in a fast-paced acute setting.

Worthing General Hospital, a 600-bed NHS Foundation Trust hospital, offers:
