Consultant Medical Oncologist
Job Overview
Consultant in Medical Oncology (with interest in Melanoma, Germ Cell Malignancies, & Acute Oncology)**
The post holder will have a subspecialty interest in melanoma, germ cell malignancies, and acute oncology, with an advantageous interest in teaching and staff training. Research and/or teaching opportunities exist, with established links to Bangor and Wrexham Universities.
The successful candidate will:
- Fully participate in the consultant-led integrated specialist oncology service across North Wales
- Show flexibility as the service evolves with additional appointments
Tumor sub-sites included in a negotiated job plan:
- Melanoma
- Germ cell malignancies
- Acute oncology
Main Duties of the Job
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide specialist oncological services to populations, focusing on common cancers and agreed subspecialties, and actively participate in multidisciplinary teams.
- Collaborate closely with clinical consultant colleagues to deliver seamless patient care.
- Work with colleagues across divisions to streamline care for patients transitioning between specialties/disciplines.
- Liaise with Oncology, Haematology, and Palliative Care for inpatient oncology coverage.
- Develop a site-specific research interest, including clinical research, and recruit patients into national/international studies.
- Support collaborative initiatives with clinical effectiveness and evidence-based practice in mind.
- Participate in audit and teaching while ensuring active involvement in continuing medical education (CME).

Essential Criteria
Qualifications / Clinical Skills
- Full GMC Registration
- MB ChB equivalent qualification
- MRCP or equivalent
- CCT or equivalent (GMC confirmation required by AAC date)
- Inclusion on Specialist Register (or eligible for inclusion within 6 months for trainee posts)

Special Knowledge / Abilities / Experience
- Appropriate training experience (SpR/SR level posts)
- Computer literacy & good IT skills
Personal Skills / Qualities
- Good interpersonal skills with patients, families and clinical teams
- Ability to build confidence & trust
- Capacity to manage pressure & adapt to change
- Experience in teaching & clinical audit
- Excellent communication skills
Desirable Criteria
- Higher Degree qualification
- Leadership experience (e.g., directing/teaching teams across medical, nursing, and allied health professions)
- Clinical Governance experience

- Published research
- Actively encouraging research collaborations with junior/other staff

- Commitment to personal development & medical education
- Enhanced DBS disclosure
- Ability to train & educate junior medical staff
