Consultant Medical Oncologist
Consultant in Medical Oncology (with specialization in Melanoma, Germ Cell Malignancies & Acute Oncology)
About the Role
The successful candidate will contribute to the consultant-led integrated specialist oncology service across North Wales, with a focus on:
- Subspecialties:
- Melanoma
- Germ cell malignancies
- Acute oncology
- Skills:
- An advantageous interest in teaching and staff training.
- Flexible approach to service evolution, including modernisation and new appointments.
- Participation in research and/or teaching, with collaboratives tied to Bangor and Wrexham Universities.
Tumor-specific responsibilities will be negotiated, aligning with the job plan and evolving specialities.
Key Responsibilities (Main Duties)
Clinical Care & Multidisciplinary Work
- Provide specialist oncological services for agreed sub-specialties, actively engaging in relevant multidisciplinary teams (MDTs).
- Collaborate with:
- Clinical consultant colleagues to ensure seamless support within cancer care pathways.
- Divisional colleagues to optimise patient transfers and continuity across disciplines.
- Oncology, Haematology, and Palliative Care colleagues to manage inpatient oncology care.
- Lead inpatient cover for oncology patients in consultation with counterparts.
Research, Audit & Education
- Establish a site-specific research interest, including:
- Developing clinical research.
- Recruitment to national/international studies.
- Open participation in audit and quality assurance initiatives.
- Engage in teaching duties (internal and external) and active involvement in Continuing Medical Education (CME).

Essential Requirements
Qualifications & Clinical Skills
- Register with the GMC.
- MB ChB (or equivalent).
- MRCP (or equivalent) qualification.
- Completion of Certificates of Completion of Training (CCT), or equivalent acceptance at the start date by the GMC. Inclusion on the Specialist Register, or eligibility for this within six months.

Specialised Knowledge & Experience
- Demonstrated experience in SpR/SR training grade roles, or equivalent approved by the Royal College/GMC for higher-tier training.
- Advanced computer/IT skills.
Personal Skills
- Exceptional interpersonal skills (management of patients, relatives, and clinical staff).
- Ability to increase patient confidence and trust, remain steady under periods of high pressure.
- Ability to adapt to change strategically.
- Experience in teaching and clinical audit.
- Strong written/oral communication abilities.
Research Commitment
- Active history of published research.
- Passion for mentoring research engagement with junior trainees staff.
Additional Mandates
- Commitment to personal development and medical education.
- Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance.
- Capability to educate/train junior medical staff.
Desirable Criteria
Qualifications & Training
- Higher degree attained in a relevant field.
Leadership
- Clinical governance experience.
- Leadership in multidisciplinary teams (educating/notably supervising allied health professionals).
Research
- Degree-level research training.
