Main duties of the job

We are excited to offer an opportunity for a Consultant Musculoskeletal Radiologist to join our Radiology Care Group at University Hospital Southampton. This is an excellent opportunity for a radiologist with subspecialist training in musculoskeletal imaging to join a team of experienced MSK consultants within one of the UK’s teaching and research hospitals.

The ideal candidate will combine strong diagnostic expertise with a passion for their service and the wider multidisciplinary team, with excellent opportunities to contribute to research and education. In this role, you will play a vital part in delivering safe, high-quality, and patient-centred imaging services, directly supporting clinical decision-making and improving outcomes for a diverse patient population.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

You will provide a high-quality musculoskeletal imaging service, including reporting and participation in a shared rota to ensure consistent service delivery. You will contribute to teaching, supervision, research, and clinical governance while supporting the development and enhancement of MSK imaging services. The role also involves working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams and undertaking administrative duties related to patient care.

Person specification

Qualifications, Training & Experience

Essential criteria

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • FRCR or equivalent
  • Completed general training in Radiology with 2 years of experience in MSK Radiology
  • At least one year of MSK experience in a tertiary centre

Desirable criteria

  • CCT Radiology
  • MRCP
  • MRCS
  • Experience using advanced post-processing or reporting imaging tools in clinical or research practice
  • Higher degree (MSc, PhD)
  • MSK Fellowship at specialist level in a recognised centre

Aptitudes and skills

Essential criteria

  • Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi-professional teams
  • Understanding of equality and diversity and how this affects patients, visitors and staff
  • Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English)
  • Demonstrate good organisational skills including ability to prioritise effectively and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrate the ability to be calm, compassionate, and able to respond efficiently to various circumstances, which may change rapidly
  • Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
  • Innovative and flexible in response to changing needs/developing service
  • Understanding of principles of research
  • Car driver, with full driving licence, or ability to travel between hospital sites or for necessary patient visits (
  • Evidence of prior audit/ research/ presentations and publications in MSK related subjects
