Consultant Paediatrician with Special Interest in Paediatric Oncology
Consultant Paediatrician (Sub-Speciality in Paediatric Oncology) – The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Norfolk
About the Role
We are seeking a motivated consultant paediatrician with a sub-speciality interest in paediatric oncology to join our dynamic and fast-paced team at the Department of Paediatrics (including Level 2 neonatal services).
The Department of Paediatrics provides in-patient and out-patient acute care, serving a population of approximately 331,000 across west and north Norfolk, North Cambridgeshire, and South Lincolnshire.
The ideal candidate will:
- Deliver consultant-level daytime paediatric and subspecialty services at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and at satellite paediatric clinics in Wisbech.
- Actively support the acute paediatric service and contribute to ward rounds at the Level 2 Local Neonatal Unit.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
- Contribute to daytime service provision in paediatrics and the consultant’s subspecialty (e.g., paediatric oncology).
- Part of the 1 in 8.5 acute ‘Consultant of the Week’ rota—this includes:
- Coverage of paediatric in-patient admissions & out-patient clinics.
- Support for the Level 2 Local Neonatal Unit (long-term dependently sick neonates).
- Participate in the 1 in 9 non-resident on-call rota (covering nights and weekends, supporting resident Tier 3 paediatricians).
- Cover the neonatal unit ward rounds (4 weeks/year) on Monday to Thursday mornings to ensure continuity.
- Leadership in specialised procedures:
- Run the hospital-wide immunisation clinic.
- Assume the role of Paediatric Mortality Lead, overseeing sudden unexpected death in infancy/childhood (SUDI/SUDC) processes.
- Play an integral part in clinical governance, especially in relation to sudden child death investigations and statutory Child Death Review processes.

Education & Training Support
- Assist with the organization and delivery of paediatric clinical teaching for:
- Cambridge University medical students on elective/placement.
- Potential training opportunities for may be applied to trainees (FGPs or Higher Specialty Training in Paediatrics/Neonatology).
Person Specification & Requirements
Essential Criteria
-Must hold Full GMC registration (UK) with Consultant level paediatric qualifications.
- UK LOCM flexion training for neonatal care (due to Level 2 unit attached).
- Strong background in paediatrics (minimum 5+ years post-CCT consultant experience preferred).
- Strong paediatric oncology sub-specialty interest (though not compulsory, it remains essential for this post).
- Willingness to cover Level 2 neonatal unit services in dedicated periods (~4 weeks/year).
Desirable Criteria
- Experience in leadership roles managing complex paediatric care services.
- Familiarity with immunisation policy & procedures (either from previous role or training).
- Knowledge of statuarory Child Death Review procedures (a strong advantage).
- Team collaborator with a willingness to work across different rotations fluently.
