Job Overview
The Acute Consultants provide senior clinical leadership across the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) and Emergency Department (ED) footprint, including AEC, Trolley Bay, AMU Assessment, AMU Short Stay, post-take, day-take, and emergency department reviews awaiting medical bed placement. Each consultant’s weekly schedule varies to ensure continuous clinical coverage, guaranteeing patient care consistency, seamless training for ward teams, and flexible working arrangements while maintaining accountability across all areas of Acute Medicine.
Current Team Structure
- Six substantive Acute Physicians
- Two long-term locums
- Subspecialty interests in Respiratory Medicine, Nephrology, General Practice and Clinical Pharmacology
- An accredited FAMUS trainer available within the team
- Close collaboration with a specialist frailty team and ED department
Key Responsibilities
Provide an Acute Consultant service for patients at Wrexham Maelor Hospital:
- Deliver high-quality clinical care at the hospital’s front door (AMU & ED), including Trolley Bay, Assessment Ward, and Short Stay care
- Supervise patient triage and on-call responsibilities
- Ensure continuity of patient management across medical wards
Service Development & Education
- Champion service improvements, including ambulatory care pathways and specialty in-reach initiatives
- Participate in General Medicine (GIM) out-of-hours rota and on-call commitments
- Engage in departmental meetings, audit, and clinical governance (including appraisal and revalidation)
- Support undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, including teaching programmes, supervision, and clinical training
- Work in close collaboration with MDT colleagues, including Primary Care, multidisciplinary specialists, and medical directors
Leadership & Management
- Lead with seniority as a clinic-based and ward-based consultant across diagnostic and management roles
- Represent the directorate at rollovers, Monday meetings, and pathway reviews
- Foster interdisciplinary teamwork to support hospital operations, trainee development, and healthcare professionals

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential Criteria
- Primary Medical Qualification (MBBS or equivalent)
- MRCP certification or equivalent
- Full GMC Registration in General Internal Medicine (GIM) or Acute Internal Medicine (AIM), or within 6 months of obtaining CCT at application interview. Applicants under CCT pathway (e.g., CESR) must hold GMC Specialist Registration in GIM or AIM by the time of application.
Desirable Criteria
- Higher degree (e.g., MD or PhD)
Experience
Essential Criteria
- Proven NHS experience
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team (MDT) setting
- Experience in quality improvement projects (QIP), audit, or workplace-based assessments

Desirable Criteria
- Interest or expertise in Acute Medicine (ideally with sub-specialty experience such as cardiology, COTE, stroke, gastroenterology, frailty, or palliative care)

- Familiarity with NHS and Welsh Health Service structures
Desirable Criteria
- Active commitment to medical education (including formal teaching, programme design, or e-learning)
- Membership of Society of Acute Medicine
- Postgraduate qualification in medical education (e.g., PGCME, PGCert)
- Peer-reviewed publications
- Demonstrated ongoing research interest or successful research grant applications
