Consultant Psychiatrist – Expanding Mental Health Services in Prison Setting
About the Role
This is an excellent opportunity for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust, a diverse, talented healthcare provider, to deliver patient-centred mental health care in prison environments. The post was created following additional funding to expand our healthcare services within our prison portfolio.
Key Locations & Working Structure
The role involves working across two Category C prisons:
- HMP Erlestoke
- HMP Guy’s Marsh (both housing sentenced prisoners)
Both prisons provide stable populations, enabling transformational work to improve outcomes for individuals with complex mental health needs.
Scope & Responsibilities
Core Role: Provide psychiatric leadership to the mental health in-reach teams at both prisons, specialising in assessment, management, and pharmacological treatment of conditions such as:
- Severe Mental Illness (SMI)
- Neurodevelopmental disorders (including ADHD)
- Mood disorders
- Complex trauma & personality disorders (collaborating closely with psychology teams in a trauma-informed care framework)
- Substance misuse (coordinated with Change Grow Live’s dedicated service)

Clinical Approach:
- Primarily outpatient work within prison healthcare departments.
- Case management akin to a Community Mental Health Team (CMHT).
- Holistic involvement in rehabilitative programming provided by the prison, including offending behaviour interventions.
- Assessments and transfers under the Mental Health Act (12(2) approval leader).
- Direct assessment of prisoners on prison wings if they become extremely unwell.
Professional Support & Development: Total 2.5 complete sessional appointing authority (SPA) allocated for:
- Teaching & training (e.g., education for multidisciplinary teams)
- Clinical governance
- Service development
- Other leadership activities
Flexibility & Work Arrangements

Working within a multidisciplinary approach, the psychiatrist will collaborate with:
- Prison psychologists (for trauma & personality disorder-focused work)
- Substance misuse teams (Change Grow Live)
- NHS and sector partners for broader care planning
