Job Overview
The Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Hergest Unit, Bangor comprises six beds and admits patients based on national guidelines across North Wales. The ward operates with full-time staff, supported by a multi-disciplinary team, including Occupational Therapists and Psychologists.
The Home Treatment Team (HTT), also based at Hergest Unit, is a well-established service covering Anglesey, North Gwynedd, and parts of West Conwy, serving a total population of around 150,000. The team operates with an average caseload of ~15 patients, working closely with local Community Mental Health Teams in line with the HTT Operational Policy.
A full-time middle-grade doctor provides clinical support to the post holder, covering both PICU and HTT.
Main Duties
Direct Clinical Care (PICU) – 3 Sessions
The post holder will:
- Take clinical responsibility for patients admitted to the PICU in Bangor, acting as Responsible Clinician.
- Serve as a reference point for the multi-disciplinary team (MDT).
- Ensure consistent and high-quality assessment, treatment, and review procedures across the unit.
- Serve a regional service, potentially accepting admissions from all over North Wales.

Direct Clinical Care (HTT) – 4 Sessions
The post holder will:
- Take clinical responsibility for patients served by the HTT in Bangor.
- Work as part of the MDT, contributing to assessment, treatment, and review standards.
- Maintain consistency and high-quality care under operational policy guidelines.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential Criteria
- Approved under S12 or eligible for approval.
- AC Approval (or eligible for approval).
- MRCPsych or equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
Desirable Criteria
- Postgraduate qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research, or management.
- Welsh AC Approval.

Eligibility
Essential Criteria
- Fully registered with the GMC and holding a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
- CCT (Certificate of Completion of Training) or equivalent (GMC confirmation required).
- Approved under S12 or able to achieve within three months of appointment.
- Approved Clinician status or eligible to achieve within three months.
Desirable Criteria
- In good standing with the GMC (no warnings or conditions).
- Welsh AC Approval.
Clinical Skills
Essential Criteria
- Evidence of training in core and specialist competencies for community psychiatry.
- Strong general medical skills.
- Experience in leading a multi-disciplinary team.
Desirable Criteria
- Further experience in MDT leadership.
Teaching & Training
Essential Criteria
- Delivered postgraduate teaching.
- Delivered multidisciplinary teaching.
Desirable Criteria
- Taught medical students.
Research & Audit
Essential Criteria
- Proven capability to initiate and lead original research.
- Completed or conducted a relevant audit project.
Desirable Criteria
- Published research in community mental health.
