Consultant Psychiatrist (Home Treatment & Psychiatric Intensive Care)

Senior Psychiatric Nurse – Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) & Home Treatment Team (HTT)


Job Overview

The Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Hergest Unit, Bangor, consists of six beds and admits patients following national guidelines across North Wales. The ward operates as a fully staffed multidisciplinary team, collaborating with professionals including Occupational Therapists and Psychologists.

Adjacent to the PICU is the Home Treatment Team (HTT), serving a population of ≈150,000 across Anglesey, North Gwynedd, and parts of West Conwy. The average caseload is 15 patients, working under the HTT Operational Policy in alignment with local Community Mental Health Teams.

Support is provided by a full-time middle-grade doctor.


Main Duties & Responsibilities

Direct Clinical Care – PICU (3 Sessions)

  • Take full clinical responsibility for patients admitted to the PICU, including acting as the Responsible Clinician.
  • Provide oversight for a regional service, accommodating admissions from across North Wales.

Direct Clinical Care – HTT (4 Sessions)

  • Presume clinical leadership within the multi-disciplinary team, ensuring consistent and high-quality assessment, treatment, and review processes.
  • Embed integral involvement in the implementation of the HTT Operational Policy.

Qualifications

Essential Criteria:

  • 12/2 Approval from the NHS (or eligible for approval by start date).
  • AC Approval (Advancing Care此刻, clinical competency) or eligibility to achieve this.
  • Well-qualified to practise at consortium level:
    • MRCPsh (Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists) or equivalent (approved by the Royal College).

Desirable Criteria:

  • Postgraduate Qualification/Doctorate in medical education, research, or management.
  • Welsh AC Approval.

Eligibility

Essential Criteria:

  • Full GMC registration with a current licence to practise.
  • Completion of Clinical Training (CCT) or equivalent (with official GMC recognition).
  • S12 (Specialist Registration) approval or ability to attain within 3 months from appointment.
  • Approved Clinician Status (S1 Status) or ability to achieve within 3 months.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Currently in good standing with the GMC (no outstanding warnings, restrictions, or conditions).

Clinical Skills

Essential Criteria:

  • Evidence of training in core and specialist competencies for community psychiatry.
  • Demonstrable general medical skills.
  • Leadership experience in delivering multi-disciplinary teams.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Further leadership in multi-disciplinary team contexts.

Teaching & Training

Essential Criteria:

  • Experience delivering postgraduate teaching the context.
  • Evidence of teaching within a multi-professional setting.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Teaching medical students or supervisors experience.

Research/Audit

Essential Criteria:

  • Proven ability to initiate and execute original research or professional audit projects.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Research in careers, mental health, audits.
