Senior Practitioner (Medical Director of Home Treatment Team and PICU Lead) – North Wales

Job Overview

The Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Hergest Unit, Bangor, consists of six beds and admits patients following national mental health guidelines from across North Wales. The ward operates under a fully-staffed model, with multi-disciplinary input from professionals including Occupational Therapists and Psychologists.

The Home Treatment Team (HTT), also based at Hergest Unit, serves Anglesey, North Gwynedd, and parts of West Conwy, covering a population of ~150,000. On average, the team manages 15 patients at a time, working closely with Community Mental Health Teams according to HTT Operational Policy. Full-time support is provided by a middle-grade doctor to assist with both PICU and HTT duties.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

3 Sessions: Direct Clinical Care – PICU

  • Take clinical responsibility for patients admitted to PICU in Bangor, acting as the Responsible Clinician.
  • Provide a regional service, accepting admissions from across North Wales.
  • Serve as a key reference point within the multi-disciplinary team, ensuring high-quality, consistent assessment, treatment, and review processes.

4 Sessions: Direct Clinical Care – HTT

  • Take clinical responsibility for patients accepted by the HTT in Bangor, acting as Responsible Clinician.
  • Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team to maintain standardised, high-quality care.
  • Align with national and local clinical policies, particularly the HTT Operational Policy.

Qualifications

Essential Criteria:

  • 12(2) Approval (or eligible for approval).
  • AC Approval (or eligibility to become approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists).
  • MRCP(S) or equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Postgraduate qualification or higher degree in:
    • Medical education
    • Clinical research
    • Healthcare management.
  • Welsh AC Approval.

Eligibility

Essential Criteria:

  • GMC registration (full licence to practise at the point of appointment).
  • Completed CCT (Certificate of Completion of Training) or equipoise (GMC confirmation by AAC deadline).
  • Approved under Section 12 (or commitment to achieve within 3 months).
  • Approved Clinician status (or commitment to achieve within 3 months).

Desirable Criteria:

  • No warnings or conditions on GMC registration.
  • Welsh AC Approval.

Clinical Skills

Essential Criteria:

  • Evidenced core and specialist competencies in community psychiatry.
  • Strong general medical skills.
  • Experience in leading multi-disciplinary teams.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Prior experience in mentoring multi-disciplinary teams.

Teaching and Training

Essential Criteria:

  • Delivered postgraduate teaching.
  • Delivered multi-disciplinary teaching.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Teaching experience with medical students.

Research & Audit

Essential Criteria:

  • Proven ability to initiate and undertake original research.
  • Conducted a relevant audit project.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Published research in community mental health.
