Job Title: Consultant Psychiatrist in General Adult Acute Care Inpatient Psychiatry
About the Role
The Ablett Unit provides acute adult inpatient psychiatry across two primary wards:
- General Adult Acute Care
- Dinas Female ward: 10 female inpatient beds
- Dinas Male ward: 10 male inpatient beds
- s136 suite: Temporary detention for those under s136 of the Mental Health Act
- Cynnydd Ward: 8-bed male locked rehabilitation ward
- Tegid Ward: 10-bed functional ward for older persons
Additionally, the Home Treatment Team (HTT) operates from this unit with capacity for 25 patients.
The service operates in collaboration with Community Mental Health Teams (CMHT) to ensure coordinated care, adhering to Mental Health Measure (Wales) 2010 standards.
Key responsibilities include:
- Responsible Clinician (RC) oversight for approximately 10 acute inpatient beds and half of HTT patients along with another Substantive Approved Clinician.
- Providing treating consultancy for inpatients and accepting referrals from Denbighshire, Conwy, East, and West localities.
- Managing a flexible bed allocation process, facilitating transfers to sister units as needed.
- Ensuring continuity of care from community outpatients or acute medical units.
- Leading a multidisciplinary team (MDT) on ward and delivering supervision for junior doctors.
Main Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership & Medical Oversight
- Responsible Clinician (RC) designations for patients under Mental Health Act and community-based supervised discharge plans.
- Collaboration with sector consultants, CMHTs, and local authorities to ensure referral coordination, continuity of care, and dignified, patient-centred discharge planning.
- Medical responsibility and handover for all patients on admission, during treatment, and at discharge from general wards.
- Utilising local guidelines and Mental Health Measure (Wales) 2010 standards in decision-making.

Crisis Intervention & Inter-agency Coordination
- Admissions typically originate from CMHT (community teams) or Psychiatric Liaison Services in regional hospitals.
- Working with local authorities to access and deliver s136 (urgent assessments), s26 (forensic assessment), and battery support across abilities (see provided examples).
- Partnering with legal and social services teams to drive holistic discharge plans.
Education & Supervisory Role
- Supervision of junior doctors by assessing and supporting trainee competence, especially in assessment, formulation, treatment, and risk management.
Treatments & Interventions
- Prescribing, monitoring, and facilitating patient-centred pharmacotherapeutic treatments.
- Participation in multi-disciplinary reviews of patients with complex needs, including those with learning disabilities, decorationally severe mental health issues, end-of-life enduring medical conditions, or frail and multiply disabled individuals.

Qualifications & Eligibility
Essential Criteria
Medical Degree & Registration
- MB BS or equivalent qualification.
- Fully registered with GMC holding a valid licence to practise.
- Specialist trainee position within 6 months of completing Clinical Competency Committee (CCT) requirements.
- Approved Clinician status achieved or able to obtain within 3 months of appointment.
- Registered under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act 1983 (Wales Amendment): Section 12 approval confirmed or able to secure within 3 months.
Desirable Criteria
Deepened Practice & Reputation
- Higher degree or postgraduate qualification in medical education, clinical research, or healthcare management.
- MRCPsych qualification (Royal Clinical Specialty Certificate in Psychiatry) or an approved equivalent.
- Welsh AC Approval, professional endorsement demonstrating consistency.
Clinical Experience
- Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary teams in psychiatric settings.
- Practical experience navigating emergency admissions, community psychiatry traces and chronic illnesses within liaising with offenders, and inter-agency health services liaison requirements.
