Consultant Psychiatrist in Acute Care

Consultant Psychiatrist in General Adult Acute Care Inpatient Psychiatry – Ablett Unit, Denbighshire/Conwy

About the Role

The Consultant Psychiatrist will lead the adult acute care service within the Ablett Unit, overseeing:

  • Two general adult inpatient wards (10 male beds, 10 female beds)
  • An S136 suite (for individuals requiring assessment under the Mental Health Act)
  • The Home Treatment Team (HTT) (managing ~25 patients at capacity)
  • Cynnydd – an 8-bedded locked male rehabilitation ward
  • Tegid ward – a 10-bedded ward for older persons

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Medical leadership of the adult acute care service, including:
    • Responsible Clinician (RC) oversight for half of adult inpatient beds (10) and 50% of HTT patients
    • Medical oversight of inpatients (admitted from Denbighshire, Conwy, or other districts)
    • Mental Health Act (MHA) and Mental Health Measure (Wales) 2010 compliance
    • Recovery-oriented, patient-centred care delivered via supervisory and consultancy roles
  • Collaborative working:
    • With Community Mental Health Teams (CMHTs) for admissions, continuity of care, and discharge planning
    • With Psychiatric Liaison Services in general hospitals
    • With local authorities for holistic care planning
  • Management of acute bed services:
    • Participation in shared bed management system across localities
    • Coordination with other units on patient cascading when required
  • Supervision of junior doctors in the team
  • Home Treatment Team (HTT) management:
    • Crisis intervention for approximately 25 patients with complex acute distress
    • Coordination with CMHT and CMHT leaders for continuity

Administrative & Governance Duties

  • Compliance with local and national policies, including Welsh mental health legislation
  • Sustainable discharge planning for patients under all forms of admission
  • Quality assurance of clinical practices within the unit
  • Successfully management of adult patient journeys, ensuring second opinion (S2O) and tribunal liaison where applicable

Requirements

Education & Certifications

Essential

  • Full MBBS (or equivalent medical qualification)
  • Full registration with the GMC (with a current licence to practise)
  • Eligibility for Medical Specialist Register by the CCT date or within 6 months of appointment
  • Approved Clinician Status or eligibility to gain within 3 months post-appointment
  • S12 Approval or eligibility to achieve within 3 months

Desirable

  • Higher degree, qualification, or training in:
    • Medical education
    • Clinical research
    • Health management
  • MRCPsych qualification (or equivalent recognised by the Royal College of Psychiatrists)
  • Welsh AC9 national approval

Clinical Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Training completed in core competencies and specialist skills for community/community acute psychiatry

  • Evidence of multi-disciplinary team leadership in mental health care
  • Experience in adult inpatient psychiatry (including secure environments)
  • Community mental health practice experience
  • Experience with discharge planning and reintegration programs
