About the Role
Ward Overview
The Ablett Unit provides adult acute care services, comprising:
- Two adult wards: 10-bed Dinas Female wards (female inpatients) and 10-bed Dinas Male wards (male inpatients), plus a Section 136 suite
- 8-bed Cynnydd Male – locked rehabilitation ward
- 10-bed Tegid Ward – Older Persons’ functional ward
- Home Treatment Team (HTT) with capacity for ~25 patients at any time
The Adult Acute Care Service covers:
- 20-bed Adult Ward
- Home Treatment Team (HTT)
Key Aspects
- Collaboration: Works closely with Community Mental Health Teams (CMHTs) for coordinated communication and care planning.
- Care Framework: Operates in line with Mental Health Measure (Wales) 2010, emphasizing patient-centred recovery.
- Supervisory & Consultancy Role:
- Responsible Clinician for ~50% of patients:
- 10 inpatient beds (Dinas Wards)
- Half of HTT caseload
- Consultant oversight with another Approved Clinician.

Main Duties & Responsibilities
Treatments & Care
- Primary Treatment Role:
- Provide inpatient care for admissions from Denbighshire, Conwy, and occasionally East/West areas.
- Work with the Home Treatment Team for crisis resolution in applicable cases (HTT covers ~25 patients max).
- Admission Pathways:
- Patients arrive either from CMHT (Community Mental Health Team) or General Hospitals (via Psychiatric Liaison Service).
- Medical handover at admission and discharge to ensure continuity.
- Medico-legal responsibility via the Mental Health Act.
- Discharge Planning:
- Lead MDT (Multi-Disciplinary Team) in collaboration with CMHTs, Sector Consultant, and Local Authorities.
- Ensure robust discharge planning aligned with policies and frameworks.

Main Responsibilities
- Consultant & Leadership:
- Serve as treating consultant for Mental Health Act cases and Cynnydd rehabilitation ward patients.
- Provide medical oversight for acute inpatients and HTT patients.
- Volunteer Leadership (if applicable): Oversee junior doctors attached to the clinical role.
- Policy Adherence:
- Apply Mental Health Act legislation, Third Party Directive, and MH Measure compliance.
- Flexibility & System Integration:
- Participate in the Division’s bed management process, including inter-locality patient relocation when needed.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential:
- MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
Desirable:
- Higher degree/qualification in medical education, clinical research, or management.
- MRCPsych (or equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists).
- Welsh AC Approval.
Eligibility
Essential:
- Fully registered with GMC and hold a licence to practice.
- Included on GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of completing CCT.
- Approved Clinician Status or able to achieve within 3 months.
- Approved under S12 (Subsection 12 of the Mental Health Act) or able to achieve within 3 months.
Desirable:
- GMC in good standing, free from warnings or warnings.
Clinical Skills
Essential:
- Evidence of training in core & specialist competencies for community psychiatry.
Desirable:
- Experience leading a multi-disciplinary team.
- Experience in community psychiatric practice.
