Consultant Community Psychiatrist – Job Description
Job Overview
The post holder will be based within the CMHT and work closely with the integrated/single line team manager to provide clinical leadership of the multi-disciplinary team.
The role involves:
- Assisting with clinical supervision of the team, ensuring robust management plans for high-need patients.
- Leading case discussions and reviews for complex cases in team meetings.
- Supporting training of team members in clinical matters.
Collaboration will be key with:
- Acute Care Services (inpatient/HoT)
- Liaising on long-term provision of Section 117 aftercare arrangements under the Mental Health (Wales) Measure 2010
- Provision of Mental Health Act appeal reports
- Consultation and supervision for Primary Mental Health Services within the catchment area.
The post holder must comply with the Mental Health (Wales) Measure 2010, ensuring high-quality patient care aligns with Welsh statutory standards.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership & Strategy
- Provide clinical leadership within the Acute Care setting.
- Develop care plans, treatment formulations, and evidence-based guidance.
- Conduct Mental Health Act 1983 assessments when required.
Professional & Administrative Duties
- Manage, appraise, and supervise junior medical staff in line with Health Board policies.
- Undertake patient care administration duties.
- Maintain accurate clinical records and submit them promptly to relevant departments.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
- Participate in annual clinical appraisals and the Health Board’s academic programme (lectures/seminars).
- Attend training and development opportunities for career progression.
Regulatory & Legal Compliance
- Maintain GMC registration in good standing.
- Hold MHA 1983 (S12(2)) approval (or ensure compliance within 3 months).
- Operate within Mental Health (Wales) Measure 2010 guidelines.
- Adhere to professional codes of conduct.
Service Development & Collaboration
- Attend annual job plan reviews with the Clinical Director, addressing service modernisation.
- Work with managers and professional colleagues to improve service efficiency.
- Contribute to medical management discussions.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential Criteria
- MB BS or equivalent qualified medical degree. (Revised from original; noting standard terminology for medical entry qualifications.)
Desirable Criteria
- Postgraduate qualification (e.g., medical education, clinical research, or management).
- MRCPsych or equivalent qualification approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
- Welsh AC (Approved Clinician) Approval (as applicable in Wales).
Registration & Eligibility
Non-Negotiable Requirements for Appointment
✅ Fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a valid practising licence. ✅ Included on the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of completing CCT (Completion of Training). ✅ Welsh Approved Clinician status for S12 approval (or applicable local equivalents). ✅ Must achieve S12 approval within 3 months of starting the role.
Desirable Criteria
- No active warnings or conditions on GMC registration.
Clinical Skills & Experience
Essential Criteria
- Evidence of training in core and specialist competencies for community psychiatry.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience in leading a multi-disciplinary team.
- Practice in community psychiatry to support effective clinical oversight.
