**Older Persons Services – Psychiatrist (Older Persons)
Job Overview
Post Holder Responsibilities The post holder will manage Older Persons Services across GP surgeries in the North Denbighshire area, covering:
- CPA reviews and inpatient ward rounds for the catchment
- Outpatient clinics and medical input to the memory service
- Organic referrals within the designated area
- Graduate supervision (where appropriate) for adult consultant psychiatrists aged 65+ with complex needs
The role adheres to the Mental Health (Wales) Measure 2010 and may occasionally involve overseeing junior doctors, contingent on training rota availability. Oversees Mental Health Act (1983) section 12/2 duties and Mental Health (Wales) Measure 2010 responsibilities.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
Clinical Care
- Provides specialist psychiatric assessment, treatment, and management for:
- Patients with cognitive impairment (including Young Onset Dementias)
- Elderly patients (aged over 70) with functional illnesses
- Supports transition to a needs-based Older Persons Mental Health Service (OPMHS)
Legislative & Service Leadership
- Operates within the Mental Health (Wales) Measure 2010, providing medical leadership for the CMHTE and consulting Primary Mental Health Services for the Elderly
- Care-coordinates select patient cases with Care and Treatment Plans

Hospital & Commissioning Support
- Delivers consultant and Responsible Clinician services for ward patients (e.g., Bryn Hesketh and Tegid Ward)
- Provides Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act opinions for the catchment area
- Completes commissioning reports for long-term healthcare funding

Eligibility & Criteria
Qualifications (Essential)
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
Qualifications (Desirable)
- Postgraduate qualification in medical education, clinical research, or management
- MRCPsych (or equivalent) approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists
- Welsh AC Approval
Licensing & Certification (Essential)
- Full GMC registration with licence-to-practise at appointment
- On GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT
- Approved Clinician status (achievable within 3 months)
- Section 12/2 approval (achievable within 3 months)
Clinical & Teaching Experience
Clinical Skills (Essential):
- Training in core and specialist competencies for community psychiatry
Desirable:
- Multidisciplinary team leadership experience
Teaching & Training (Essential):
- Evidence of postgraduate teaching delivery
- Evidence of multidisciplinary education
Desirable:
- Undergraduate medical student instruction experience
