Older Persons Services – Community Psychiatrist Position
Job Overview
The post holder will oversee Older Persons Services, covering GP surgeries in North Denbighshire. Key responsibilities include:
- Conducting CPA reviews and ward rounds for inpatients, outpatient clinics, and memory service inputs.
- Managing organic and cognitive referrals within the catchment area.
- Potentially graduating patients (with adult consultant psychiatrists approval) aged 65+ where complex needs are present.
- Ensuring compliance with the Mental Health (Wales) Measure 2010.
- Collaborating with junior doctors as needed (training rota-dependent).
- Providing Section 12/2 Mental Health Act (1983) and Mental Health (Wales) Trust 2010 responsibilities.
Main Duties
Clinical Responsibilities
- Conduct specialist psychiatric assessments, treatments, and management for:
- Individuals with cognitive impairment (including Young Onset Dementias).
- Patients over 70 with functional illnesses (supporting transition to a needs-based Older Persons Mental Health Service (OPMHS)).
- Work under Mental Health (Wales) Measure 2010 guidelines.
- Provide Consultant and Responsible Clinician services for inpatients at Bryn Hesketh and Tegid Ward.
- Offer Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act opinions for patients within the catchment area.

Additional Duties
- Submit reports and consultative support for the Health Board’s long-term care commissioning.
- Lead medical governance for CMHTE (Community Mental Health Team Excellence).
- Collaborate with Primary Mental Health Services for the Elderly.
- Coordinate Care and Treatment Plans for selected cases.

Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
- MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
Desirable Qualifications
- Higher degree in medical education, clinical research, or management.
- MRCPsych or equivalent Royal College of Psychiatrists accreditation.
- Welsh AC approval.
Essential Eligibility Criteria (for Appointment)
- Fully GMC-registered with an active licence to practice.
- Enrolled on GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT completion.
- Approved Clinican status (or able to gain within 3 months).
- Section 12/2/S1 Mental Health Act approval (or able to achieve within 3 months).
Desirable Eligibility Criteria
- No GMC warnings or practice restrictions.
Essential Clinical Skills
- Experience in community psychiatry core & specialist competencies.
Desirable Clinical Skills
- Leadership in multidisciplinary team environments.
Essential Teaching & Training Evidence
- Delivered postgraduate teaching.
- Engaged in multidisciplinary teaching.
Desirable Teaching & Training Experience
- Educated medical students.
