Consultant Older Adult Community Mental Health Leading Light – Hackney Wick

Job Overview

Join a thriving Older Adult Community Mental Health team where you will collaborate with a Consultant, higher trainee, and core trainees within the CMDT. Your role will include:

  • Providing a holistic and assertive service to older people with severe mental illness
  • Operating within a community clinic in Hackney Wick
  • Leading with a focus on quality mental healthcare in an exceptional environment.

The location is just a 5-minute walk from Hackney Wick Overground Station and a single stop from Stratford, which offers major transport connections in East London.

Diverse community: Hackney Wick features an eclectic blend of artist studios in former industrial spaces, quirky cafés, and creative eateries, with the scenic River Lee Navigation nearby. Just down the road, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park hosts the iconic London Stadium (home to West Ham United), business centrelike Here East, and bustling startups.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

Following a noted change in the current Consultant’s role, a specialized position is now available. Key responsibilities include:

ResponsibilityEstablishment
LeadershipProvide consultant-level leadership, supervision, and mentorship to team members.
Collaborate in the assessment of patients referred to the service, along with the creation of co-produced care plans addressing psychiatric, physical, psychological, and social needs, via a multidisciplinary approach.
Maintain strong communication with patients’ GPs and other team members.
Care plansReview and update care plans, involving GPs, carers, and any relevant professionals as needed.

Personal Specification

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Medical degree — MBBS or equivalent.
  • Fully registered with the GMC.
  • Eligible for Specialist Register inclusion (or within 6 months of CCT Award).
  • Membership of Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent qualification (aligned with RCPsych Guidelines).
  • With or eligible for Approved Clinician status ( Mental Health Act 2007).

Desirable:

  • Higher Degree in relevant specialties.

Knowledge

Essential:

  • Experience in Older Adult Psychiatry at ST4-ST6 level or Consultant level within the last three years.
  • Expertise in psychopharmacology.
  • Extensive experience in community adult psychiatry.
  • Comprehensive understanding and practical experience of the Mental Health Act.
  • Grasping social aspects relevant to psychiatry.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge and experience in recovery-informed service delivery.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with patients as experts by experience.

Clinical Skills

Essential:

  • Team Performance: Ability to effectively function in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Diagnosis and Treatment: Competence handling psychosis, mood disorders, and their associated comorbidities—through risk assessment and evidence-based interventions.
  • Clinical Judgment: Confidence in therapeutic risk-taking.
  • Commitment to Covenant: Strong adherence to clinical governance.

Desirable:

  • N/A

Teaching

Essential:

  • Trainee Mentorship: Experience teaching junior staff.
  • Communication Skills: Outstanding teaching and communication abilities.
  • Training and Supervising: Skilled in training and supervising junior doctors, alongside medical students or other disciplines within mental health.
  • Professional Education: Proven experience teaching non-medical mental health professionals.

Desirable:

  • Medical Education Qualification.

Research

Essential:

  • Ability and willingness to educate medical students and lecture across undergraduate and MRCPsych courses.
