Consultant Breast Radiologist

We are looking to appoint one full-time substantive Consultant Breast Radiologist post based at the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust in replacement of our fixed-term locum consultant post. The post includes programmed activities in symptomatic breast and general radiology. We can also support another subspecialty interest including paediatrics, head and neck, neurology, and cardiothoracic radiology.

The post has arisen because of the expansion of the service. The successful candidate will join a team of 31 consultant radiologists to help deliver Diagnostic Imaging Services to the Trust and local commissioners. Candidates are required to have a subspecialty interest in Breast imaging and associated intervention.

There has been considerable recent investment in the department, including the development of a dedicated Breast Unit on the New QEII Hospital site. This purpose-built unit opened in June 2015, deals with nearly 600 breast cancers annually. Currently, there are 5 breast radiologists supporting 4 breast surgeons. There are 4 radiographers trained in mammography supported by 2 associate mammographer. We have two additional mammographers, one trained in performing breast ultrasound and one trained in stereotactic procedures.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

The workload of the successful candidate would be approximately that recommended by the Royal College of Radiologists. There will be a minimum of 4 breast clinical sessions based on a full-time job and the remainder a mixture of general and other subspecialty. The successful candidate would also play a role in teaching and developing skill mix within the Unit and participate in the MDT meetings.
