Job Description: Consultant Town Planner

AECOM’s Planning and Stakeholder Engagement business is recruiting Consultant Planners to help deliver its existing portfolio of projects and pipeline, particularly focusing on large-scale infrastructure.

Our Town Planning team operates nationally and supports a hybrid working model, offering flexibility on base location. Possible bases include: Basingstoke, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Chesterfield, Leeds, London Aldgate, Manchester, and Plymouth, with flexibility for hybrid working arrangements.

Responsibilities

Planning & Development Management

  • Assist in the management and successful delivery of major development applications.
  • Provide planning advice to colleagues and clients, including the application of permitted development rights.
  • Conduct planning research and analysis to help identify planning risks.

Technical Reporting & Documentation

  • Prepare Planning Statements and Design and Access Statements to support development applications.
  • Liaise with the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) team to ensure coordinated project delivery.

Project Coordination & Delivery

  • Coordinate multi-disciplinary teams across a variety of project types.
  • Assist with project management activities ensuring successful project outcomes.
  • Implement quality assurance and health and safety principles.

Qualifications & Requirements

Ready to push the limits of what’s possible? Here’s what we’re looking for:

Professional Qualifications

  • Licentiate Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) or an equivalent professional town planning organisation, working towards full accreditation.

Planning & Technical Expertise

  • Demonstrated experience working on major planning applications.
  • In-depth knowledge of UK planning policy and legislation.
  • Experience with Development Consent Orders (DCO) and/or Transport and Works Act Order (TWAO) applications.
  • Understanding of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) legislation.
  • Expertise in identifying, evaluating, and managing planning risks.

Commercial & Consultancy Skills

  • Commercial awareness and the ability to write clearly and concisely.
  • Experience in consultancy projects, including monitoring and managing project budgets and programmes.

  • Strong client-facing skills with excellent interpersonal abilities.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in multi-disciplinary teams.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, such as Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Project.
