AECOM’s Planning and Stakeholder Engagement business is recruiting Consultant Town Planners to assist with existing projects and an expanding pipeline across major infrastructure sectors, including:
- Renewables
- Energy/electricity related infrastructure
- Transport
- Defence
- Water
- Regional and local developments
The role supports hybrid working and can be based from offices in: Basingstoke, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Chesterfield, Leeds, London Aldgate, Manchester, or Plymouth.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Planning & Development Management
- Assist in managing and successfully delivering major development applications.
- Offer planning advice to teams and clients, notably regarding permitted development rights.
- Conduct planning research and risk identification.

Technical Reporting & Documentation
- Prepare Planning Statements and Design & Access Statements for development applications.
- Collaborate with the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) team to ensure cohesive project delivery.
Project Coordination & Delivery
- Lead multi-disciplinary teams across multiple project types.
- Support project management activities to achieve successful project outcomes.
- Implement quality assurance and health & safety principles.

- Contribute to drafting successful commercial tenders.

- Solar Development Consent Orders (DCOs).
- Carbon capture and energy storage initiatives.
- Grid upgrade projects (including National Grid’s Great Grid Upgrade).
- Large aviation and rail projects.
- Housing and mixed-use developments.
AECOM is a top 10 UK Planning consultancy, employing around 70 Chartered or Licentiate Planners, and is the largest UK consultancy specializing in environmental and engineering support.
Requirements
Qualifications & Experience
- Professional Planning Accreditation: RTPI Licentiate Member or equivalent, with aspirations to achieve full membership.
- Major Planning Applications: Proven track record in managing large-scale planning applications.
- Policy & Regulation Knowledge: Deep understanding of UK planning policy and legislation, including Development Consent Orders (DCOs) and Transport and Works Act Orders (TWAOs).
- EIA Competence: Familiarity with Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) legislation.
- Planning Risk: Experience in identifying, evaluating, and managing planning risks.
Commercial & Consultancy Skills
- Strong commercial awareness and writing ability.
- Consultancy experience, including project budgets/program management.
Stakeholder Engagement & Team Collaboration
- Exceptional client relationships with solid interpersonal and collaborative skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally in multi-disciplinary teams.
