Consultant Transplant Respiratory Physician

Consultant Lung Transplant for Manchester Foundation Trust (MFT) – Wythenshawe Hospital

Job Title: Consultant Lung Transplant

Location: Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester Foundation Trust Contract: Full-Time Permanent Clinics & Ward Rounds:

  • Pre-transplant clinics
  • Post-transplant clinics
  • Bronchoscopy
  • 2–4 ward rounds per week

About the Role

The substantive post within the Lung Transplant Service is designed for candidates with substantial experience in the pre- and post-operative management of lung transplant patients. You will collaborate closely with 2 existing Respiratory/Transplant Consultants and multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) to deliver and enhance our dedicated transplant service.

As part of this high-volume transfusion service (10 post slots), the successful candidate will:

  • Provide continuous care for heart and lung transplant recipients, sharing governance with respiratory consultants, cardiologists, and surgical teams.
  • Share the living transplant medicine on-call roster, ensuring responsive out-of-hours support.
  • Assess patients for lung transplant eligibility alongside ongoing management of approved recipients.
  • Lead one pre-transplant clinic and one post-transplant clinic weekly.
  • Conduct bronchoscopy procedures, including designated lung transplant cases.
  • Participate in two weekly MDTs (multi-disciplinary team meetings) to coordinate transplant care protocols.

The post-holder will also support staff across the service, including:

  • Transplant specialist nurses
  • Research nurses
  • Clinical and research fellows

Ward Responsibilities:

  • Lead care for 16-bed transplant ward, including admission/oevernitseguir of variable numbers of patients in Critical Care (CTCU) with heart and lung transplant needs, as well as patients requiring artificial heart support.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Delivery & Team Support:

  • Lead or contribute to one dedicated pre-transplant clinic, ensuring eligibility assessments and optimisation.
  • Manage one post-transplant clinic to monitor long-term graft outcomes and patient health.
  • Offer 2–4 ward rounds weekly for lung transplant recipients.
  • Host one designated bronchoscopy procedure per week for lung transplant patients.
  • Sit on two weekly MDTs to deliver care plans, monitor complications, and discuss clinical progress.
  • Support colleagues, including nursing specialists, research teams, and new consultants.

On-Call & Shift Coverage:

  • Share responsibility for living transplant medicine on-call, inclusive of urgent transfers and emergencies.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Named substantive experience in pre- and post-operative lung transplant patient management.
  • Understanding of shared governance with respiratory/heart teammates.
  • Demonstrated ability to organise high-volume clinics, ward rounds, and MDTs efficiently.
  • Competency in bronchoscopy procedures with lung transplant patients.

Desirable:

  • Experience in working across Respiratory, Cardiology, and Intensive Care teams.
  • Prior involvement in clinician education & mentor roles.
