About the Department
The department in Blackburn is an integrated Urology outpatients, ward, and offices. The Urology ward is based on B14. The dedicated Urology outpatient's suite has facilities for flexible cystoscopies and transperineal and transrectal ultrasound and prostate biopsies. The department also has two Holmium:YAG and one Thulium-fibre laser machines that are used for endourology. In addition, there are two TULA laser machines to enable flexible cystoscopy and bladder tumor ablations procedures in the outpatient setting.
The department is an accredited cancer center for the Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Network where the major pelvic cancer surgery is split between East Lancashire Hospitals Trust and one other provider. The trust has three NHS commissioned da Vinci robots.
On the Burnley site, there is a Urology Investigations Unit (UIU), which is a large, purpose-built unit where flexible cystoscopy, urodynamics, TULA laser ablations, and perineal precision point prostate biopsy sessions, and outpatient (OP) clinics take place. Some minimally invasive prostate procedures traditionally done in theatre are now being done in the OP setting in the UIU, and this will expand further. Inpatient work and day case surgery are performed in the Elective Surgical Centre. Paediatric urological surgery is also performed in Burnley. The department provides extracorporeal lithotripsy services once a month, using mobile lithotripsy providers.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
