Consumer Health Specialist

Pay Range: $26.57–$29.89/hr Closing Date: Thursday, July 9, 2026 ✅ Work Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM; Some evening/weekend hours required

This role supports Environmental Services within the Consumer Health Division, ensuring public safety through:

  • Building plan reviews and permit issuance
  • Routine health inspections (food establishments, childcare centers, pools, hotels, special events)
  • Investigations into foodborne illness and public health complaints
  • Mosquito surveillance to prevent West Nile virus spread

📚 Minimum Qualifications

To apply, you must meet all of the following:

  • Education: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with at least 30 semester hours (or equivalent) in a basic/applied science, per Texas Administrative Code (TAC).
  • Experience: 2 years of increasingly responsible experience in fields such as:
    • Consumer health
    • Regulatory compliance
    • Food service/manufacturing
    • Vector control
    • Public pool management/maintenance
    • Childcare
  • Licensure:
    • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Texas Professional Sanitarian (R.S.) or Registered Environmental Health Sanitarian (R.E.H.S.) license within 12 months of hire.
  • Driving: A valid driver’s license is required.

  • Degree majoring in environmental science, biological science, public health, or related field.
  • Bilingual skills (Spanish/English) are highly preferred.

🔧 Key Responsibilities

The Consumer Health Specialist will:

  • Conduct health inspections of:
    • Food establishments
    • Childcare centers
    • Public swimming pools
    • Hotels
    • Temporary events
  • Investigate foodborne illness outbreaks and public health complaints.
  • Review building plans and examine permits for new/remodeled establishments:
    • Food services
    • Childcare facilities
    • Public pools/hotels
  • Issue citations or permit suspensions; appear in Municipal Court as required.
  • Deliver public education on:
    • Food safety handling
    • Illness prevention/sanitation practices
    • Pool maintenance procedures
  • Organize special events, coordinating scheduling and interagency collaboration.
  • Participate in mosquito surveillance programs to prevent West Nile virus.
