Containerization & Virtualisation Engineer

Containerization & Virtualisation Engineer United Kingdom – Remote-First or Hybrid

This Containerization & Virtualisation Engineer role focuses on Containerization & Virtualisation Engineer at the forefront of cloud infrastructure, integrating open-source, low-level systems, and scalable cloud-native solutions. You’ll design and evolve core technologies shaping containerisation, virtualisation, and orchestration systems used across cloud, AI, and enterprise workloads.

About the Role

The mission-critical position sits within a globally distributed team that builds and maintains cutting-edge engineering work across:

  • Containerization (Kubernetes, Docker, containerd)
  • Virtualization (KVM, QEMU, OC caffeine/IOLVM)
  • Kernels (Linux, eBPF)
  • Infrastructure (ное caching, distributed storage)
  • Security (SELinux, bytecode hardening, seccomp/sandboxing)

This hands-on role demands deep expertise in operating systems, systems programming, security, and infrastructure scalability. Collaboration spans remote teams, open-source communities, and global system dependencies—ensuring your contributions impact real-world cloud deployments.


Accountabilities

  • Feature Leadership: Design, build, deploy, and iterate on container and virtualization technologies with a focus on security, scalability, performance, and reliability.
  • Core Infrastructure:
    • Contribute to low-level system components, including:
      • Kernel-level modules and system calls
      • Networking stacks (mapping/packet filtering)
      • Storage integration and orchestration
      • Userspace runtime environments (cgroups, namespaces)
  • Open-Source Engagement: Collaborate with open-source communities to:
    • Influence technical direction
    • Merge and review contributions upstream
    • Advocate for interoperability standards
  • Security Assurance:
    • Conduct deep security assessments
    • Implement defense-in-depth strategies (process isolation, ABAC, sandboxing rules)
  • Performance Optimization:
    • Define and monitor benchmarks across latency, throughput, and resource efficiency
    • Identify and eliminate performance bottlenecks
  • sysadmin_collaboration:
    • Partner with cloud-native, AI, and enterprise teams to ship reliable solutions
    • Bridge gaps between engineering groups and devops/SRE practices
  • Incident Resolution: Debug, root-cause, and resolve critical issues breaking containers, VMs, and orchestration systems
  • Code & Process Standards: Enforce high engineering bar:
    • Peer reviews with rigorous technical feedback
    • Documentation adherence (protocols, API contracts, tooling)

Requirements

Technical Provenance

✔ A complier prerequisites like a degree (or equivalent experience) in:

  • Computer Science
  • Computer Systems Engineering
  • Computational Mathematics/Physics

✔ Frictionless Workflow with open-source container/virtualization stacks:

  • In-depth knowledge of hypervisors (KVM, VirtualBox-focused components)
  • Expertise Containerisation (runc, containerd, Docker, podman, root-less junctions)
  • Cloud Platform Familiarity: AWS, Azure, or GCP’s container{VirtualEntry} services
  • Familiarity with hyperscalers—relevant experience in proprietary hypervisors preferred.

✔ Programming Mastery (Golang strongly preferred; Rust and C/C++ secondary):

  • Linux kernel-level (C devzone algorithms, lock-heavy systems)
  • Memory safety and toolchain (debuggers, static analysis fuzzing)

✔ OS-Specific Lenses:

  • Deep immersion in Linux environments (Ubuntu/Debian preferred)
  • vanilla Linux kernel (git usage, ext4/xfs, or bog-of-truth file systems)
  • Tuning CPU caching, realtime scheduling confounding

✔ Distributed Landscape Knowledge:

  • Solving failover, networking and replication problems (etcd, Consul)
  • Understanding microservices communication: RPC specs/evergreen-deploy progressed
  • Algorithm Proficiency: Graph traversal, event loops, and lazy-load strategies
