Content Editor (6m FTC)
Job Title: Content Editor (6-Month Fixed Term Contract)
Location: Reigate, UK (Hybrid working; 1 day in the office per week)
About the Role
At Puzzler, part of the DC Thomson media company, we are seeking a Content Editor for a 6-month fixed-term contract in Reigate, UK. This role involves ensuring that each puzzle product drives engagement, supports revenue performance, and maintains brand distinctiveness.
You’ll adapt content formats for digital growth and automation, using data, audience insights, and AI-enabled tools to optimise the content mix, production efficiency, and quality.
Additionally, the role focuses on ensuring consistent execution across a portfolio model, sharing best practice, and contributing to scalable content standards.
The Company & Opportunity
As the oldest puzzle brand in the UK, Puzzler has a rich 50-year heritage, creating puzzles for newspapers (Courier, Press & Journal, The Sunday Post), magazines (Stylist, My Weekly), and comic books like the Beano. The team also delivers puzzles for other publications and exports content worldwide to Australia, Canada, and the USA.
This is a unique opportunity for someone passionate about puzzles, offering the chance to:
- Generate batches of puzzles within our system, editing and proofreading as needed.
- Create new puzzles from scratch, including writing engaging clues and ensuring editorial standards.

- Deliver each issue and digital output on time and within budget.
- Achieve agreed revenue, circulation, and engagement targets through robust content planning and execution.

2. Audience-Centred Content Optimisation
- Utilise audience data and performance insights to refine content mix, difficulty levels, and formats, enhancing engagement, retention, and repeat usage.
3. Editorial Quality and Accuracy
- Maintain consistently high editorial standards, ensuring all content is accurate, error-free, and aligned with brand positioning.
- Drive a measurable reduction in defects.
4. Contributor and Supply Chain Performance
- Build and manage a reliable network of contributors, improving quality, turnaround time, and cost efficiency while scaling output across the portfolio.
5. Digital and Data Integration
- Apply data analytics and AI-assisted tools to enhance content creation, workflow efficiency, and discoverability.
- Embed repeatable and scalable practices into editorial workflows.
6. Cross-Portfolio Collaboration and Best Practice
- Actively share, adopt, and standardise editorial best practice across titles and teams to improve consistency, efficiency, and performance.
Skills
For this role, the successful candidate should possess the following skills:
Essential Skills
- Excellent command of English language and grammar, both written and spoken.
- Curation skills: Ability to select, structure, and optimise content for specific audiences and channels, ensuring relevance, quality, and engagement at scale.
- Content authoring & editing: Expertise in creating high-quality written and puzzle-based content, with an emphasis on consistency and brand alignment.
- Data analysis: Experience interpreting audience and performance data to inform decisions, optimise output, and drive measurable improvements in engagement and commercial outcomes.
- Planning & workflow management: Ability to plan, schedule, and deliver editorial projects efficiently, juggling multiple deadlines.
- Supplier management experience: Proven ability to manage external contributors and suppliers to standards of quality, value, and performance.
- Tech-savviness: Willingness and ability to learn new software, specifically the ALPH puzzle generation system.
- Knowledge of digital and online puzzle ecosystem.
- Logical puzzle creation & cluing: Comfortable applying analytical thinking to develop puzzles and clues.

Desirable Skills
- Familiarity with Adobe Suite tools, such as Illustrator and InDesign.
