Contract / Wordings Specialist

As part of the group, Hiscox London Market insures unusual, complex and larger global risks across a number of specialist lines of business. The Casualty line of business writes a broad portfolio including directors’ and officers’ liability, general liability and cyber risks. The role will support this area by working closely with Casualty underwriters, claims colleagues, brokers and business partners to develop clear, commercially effective and technically robust contract wordings. The Wordings team sits within the Underwriting function, which drives technical excellence and strong underwriting controls across Hiscox London Market. The team is recognised as a critical knowledge resource for the business, providing expert guidance on coverage, contract certainty, regulation and emerging risk across multiple lines of business. The Role We are looking for a Contract Wordings Specialist to join the Wordings team, reporting to the Head of Wordings, with a particular focus on supporting the Casualty line of business. This is a varied and high-impact role supporting live business across a specialist casualty portfolio, with regular interaction across underwriting, claims, legal, compliance and external market stakeholders. The successful candidate will provide expert support on contractual matters, helping the business respond to coverage and regulatory questions, develop and maintain high-quality wordings, and ensure contracts are issued in line with Hiscox underwriting standards and controls. What you’ll be doing in the role Partnering with Casualty underwriters to provide practical guidance on coverage, contract certainty, wording development during the risk placement process and regulatory considerations across multi-jurisdictional business, including US surplus lines and non-admitted risks,. Drafting, reviewing and negotiating contract wordings, endorsements and clauses for casualty risks, ensuring they are clear, commercially appropriate and aligned to underwriting intent. Supporting new and existing product development by advising on wording structure, coverage implications and legal risk management. Maintaining and developing internal wordings resources, clause libraries, templates and repositories to promote consistency and efficiency across the Wordings team and the business areas it supports. Providing technical guidance notes, training and knowledge-sharing for underwriters and other stakeholders on contractual matters and emerging casualty issues. Representing Hiscox in relevant Lloyd’s and London Market forums, contributing to market-level thinking on emerging risks, legal developments and wording solutions. Working collaboratively with colleagues across Hiscox, including Europe and the USA where relevant, to support an international book of business. We are looking for someone with Lloyd’s Market experience, gained in casualty, liability, cyber and financial lines, on an open market or delegated authority basis. Strong contract drafting capability, excellent attention to detail and a sound understanding of insurance policy construction. A commercial understanding of insurance products and the value clear, well-constructed wordings bring to customers, brokers and underwriters., Confidence to make decisions on coverage, explain the reasoning clearly and evaluate the materiality of technical points. The ability to lead and facilitate technical discussions with a range of stakeholders, including underwriters, claims colleagues, brokers and legal or compliance partners. An inquisitive, high performing individual with a solutions-focused approach and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and support multiple live placement, product and governance matters. Our must haves Relevant wordings, underwriting support, technical underwriting or insurance legal experience, ideally gained in the Lloyd’s or London Market environment. Experience working with casualty, liability, financial lines or cyber insurance wordings. Proven contract drafting skills, including strong written English, sound grammar and the ability to translate underwriting intent into clear policy wording. Strong attention to detail and confidence working with complex contractual, regulatory and coverage issues. Nice to have A law degree, legal qualification or legal experience involving the review, drafting or negotiation of commercial contracts. Experience working with casualty, liability, financial lines or cyber insurance wordings. Familiarity with Lloyd’s, LMA or other London Market wording standards, model clauses and market guidance. General non-marine insurance and reinsurance market background and knowledge of market issues. Diploma in Insurance Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) qualification, or above.
