Control Engineer
Prenton Starting salary: £53,280–£66,600 per annum
About the Role
At SP Energy Networks (SPEN), we drive innovation to create smarter, sustainable energy networks. Our Control Room manages electricity distribution for 1.5 million customers across Merseyside, Cheshire, and North Wales—balancing innovation, safety, and service.
This shift-based Control Engineer role (reporting to the Senior Control Engineer) sits in Customer Service within SPEN’s transformative distribution network strategy. As we evolve into a Distribution System Operator (DSO), you’ll play a key role in shaping Net Zero, network security, and flexible energy access for the future.
Key Responsibilities
Network & Operational Leadership
- Manage control and operation of the electrical network under normal, outage, and fault conditions, ensuring safety, system integrity, and customer service.
- Approve and orchestrate outage and network access requests, minimising security risks.
- Coordinate outage planning and liaise with internal/external stakeholders for network activities.
- Implement emergency contingency plans and escalate critical incidents across the business.
Customer & Technical Support
- Proactively manage customer service to meet KPIs, including reactive incident resolution.
- Support generation partners in flexibility service arrangements and Distribution Restart Zone (DR) partnerships.
- Advise on High Voltage network technical matters and provide expert guidance to stakeholders.

Performance & Innovation
- Review and investigate system performance post-incidents, identifying opportunities for improvement.
- Monitor CML outage requests, optimize system efficiency, and ensure accurate operational data for IT systems.
- Develop and introduce new processes/initiatives to enhance safety, service, and operational effectiveness.
- Drive cultural shifts to reinforce customer-focused and safety-first principles across shift teams.
Required Skills & Experience
- Technical Knowledge: Essential distribution/network experience, ideally with High Voltage operational qualifications (e.g., Senior Authorised Person).
- Functional Proficiency: Degree/HNC in Electrical Engineering, complemented by strong related experience.
- Soft Skills:
- Strong interpersonal relationships across Energy Networks business units.
- Negotiation, leadership, and decision-making expertise.
- Ability to interpret technical data and post-fault analysis.
- Collaboration with transmission/distribution systems expertise.
