# Control & Protection Engineer (Derbyshire)

Within our Transmission & Distribution team, we deliver mission-critical design packages that transform the reliability, availability, and efficiency of the energy network, moving it towards a greener, more sustainable future. Department highlights include:

High Voltage design and delivery: Designing AIS and GIS substations from 11kV to 245kV, including conventional and renewable power generation connections; peaking, battery storage, and solar PV plants; as well as data centres and process plants.

Low Voltage and Instrumentation design: Supply gas network design frameworks, providing electrical and instrumentation engineering services for onshore natural gas industry and regulated gas utilities in Ireland and the UK, including compressor station, AGI electrical & instrumentation design, fiscal/non-fiscal metering, and cathodic protection.
With a team of 220+ skilled engineers, we operate on a global scale, delivering tailored engineering services that drive long-term success across Europe, North America, and Asia.
Position Summary
NeoDyne are recruiting a Control & Protection Engineer to join our expanding Transmission & Distribution team. The role involves designing, configuring, and commissioning protection and control systems for:
- Substations
- Renewable energy projects
- Industrial power systems

Key Responsibilities
Design and Engineering
- Develop Protection and Control (P&C) designs for HV and MV substations, including:
- Protection schemes
- Control schematics
- Single Line Diagrams (SLDs)
- Interlocking diagrams
- Specify and design:
- AC/DC auxiliary systems
- Control panels
- Marshalling cabinets
- Wiring diagrams
- Prepare:
- Protection Coordination Studies
- Fault current calculations
- Relay grading reports
- Select and configure protection relays and prepare detailed setting files
- Design and implement:
- Substation Automation Systems (SAS)
- RTU/PLC logic
- IEC 61850-based systems
- Create:
- Control logic diagrams
- Signal lists
- Communication interfaces for:
- SCADA integration
- RTU integration
- Intelligent Electronic Device (IED) communication
Testing, Commissioning, and Verification
- Develop Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) and Site Acceptance Test (SAT) procedures for control and protection systems
- Conduct:
- Relay testing
- Secondary injection testing
- End-to-end system verification
- Verify:
- Correct protection functionality
- Trip logic
- Interlocking
- Communication protocols
- Provide on-site technical support during commissioning, energisation, and fault-finding phases
Documentation and Compliance
- Produce:
- Comprehensive design documentation
- Wiring schedules
- Technical specifications
- As-built drawings
- Ensure compliance with:
- Transmission Network Operator (TNO) and Distribution Network Operator (DNO) standards
- IEC/EN standards
- Client-specific design rules
- Support:
- Development of design templates
- Engineering standards
- Quality Assurance (QA) processes

Project Delivery and Collaboration
- Report to the Lead or Senior Engineering Manager
- Provide guidance and training to junior and graduate engineers
- Engage with:
- Clients
- OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers)
- Suppliers to clarify technical interfaces, requirements, and project timelines
Experience & Skills
Required
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Electrical, Energy Engineering, or equivalent
- 2+ years of experience in a similar electrical or substation design role
- Knowledge of:
- UK Transmission System Operator (TSO)/DNO protection and control schemes
- Independent Combination Provider (ICP) guidelines
Desired
- Experience in a NERS-certified environment or for major UK utilites
- Familiarity with IEC 61850 and programming Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED) relays
