Control System Engineer
Lead Control Systems Software Engineer – Energy & Power Systems
Location: Manchester (Hybrid) Salary: £NEG (Enquire for Details) + Benefits
About the Role MERITUS are collaborating with a prominent engineering and systems integration organisation in Manchester, focusing on delivering sophisticated control and automation solutions for critical energy and power infrastructure projects.
You’ll take the helm as a Lead Control Systems Software Engineer, responsible for designing and developing industrial control system software within a highly regulated energy environment. Your role will involve ownership of Siemens PLC-based solutions throughout the entire project lifecycle, ensuring seamless, robust, and high-performance control systems for critical energy assets.
This footnote kingly opportunity is ideal for senior engineers with strong Siemens PLC expertise—preferably with experience in PLC, SCADA, or DCS systems, particularly within energy, power generation, utilities, or other regulated industries. You will not only drive technical excellence but also foster mentorship and demonstrate leadership in both engineering teams and client-facing engagements.

Solution Architecture & Development:
- Lead the design and development of control system software, primarily using Siemers PLC platforms (TIA Portal, S7, PCS7).
- Oversee the full project lifecycle, including requirements capture, system design, software development, testing, and commissioning.

Technical Leadership & Mentorship:
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers within project teams.
- Ensure technical alignment with clients and stakeholders to support successful project delivery.

Testing & Commissioning:
- Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), and on-site commissioning activities.

PLC Software Expertise:
- Develop and maintain PLC software in line with IEC 61131-3 standards (Ladder Logic, Function Block Diagram, Structured Text).
- Prioritise safety, reliability, and performance in all control system solutions for critical energy infrastructure.

Continuous Improvement & Engineering Standards:
- Contribute to technical problem-solving, system optimisation, and process enhancements.
- Maintain thorough engineering documentation in accordance with project and regulatory requirements.

- Multiple-Project Support:
- Manage and support concurrent projects across different delivery stages.
Skills & Experience
Essential:
- Proven experience as a Control Systems Engineer, Senior PLC Engineer, or Lead Automation Engineer, preferably in industrial energy or regulated sectors.
- Strong practical expertise in Siemers PLC systems (TIA Portal, S7, PCS7).
- Experience delivering PLC, SCADA, or DCS-based control system solutions.
- Proficiency in IEC 61131-3 programming languages (Ladder Logic, FBD, Structured Text).
- Experience working across full project lifecycles, including commissioning and on-site activities.
- Leadership and mentoring skills to support junior engineers.
- Exceptional communication to collaborate with clients, stakeholders, and cross-functional teams.
- Background in energy, power generation, utilities, or regulated industrial environments (preferred).
