Control Systems Engineer
# Controls Systems Engineer Location: Royston, UK (site-based)
About the Role
Join Johnson Matthey’s Engineering Support Team as a Software/Controls Engineer (SCE), reporting to the Controls System Lead Engineer. You’ll drive the design, installation, management, and maintenance of equipment and software for PLC and SCADA systems, ensuring optimal monitoring and control of Royston’s plant operations.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Fault finding, testing logic coding, and implementing changes to the existing controls infrastructure.
- Collaborating on MOC requests and contributing to HAZOP Studies/PHA reviews as a technical representative.
- Delivering software and controls input for projects, spanning modifications to systems or brand-new installations.

Your Impact
As a Controls Systems Engineer, you’ll champion our sustainability mission by: ✔ Supporting projects with controls/software recommendations for plant reliability, maintenance, and modernisation. ✔ Developing and aligning controls strategies to match current and future business needs. ✔ Ensuring adherence to safety standards for alarms and PLC-based systems. ✔ Serving as an expert for PLCs (preferably Omron or Allen-Bradley) and SCADA, including Wonderware (Intouch) and Inductive Automation’s IGNITION. ✔ Resolving complex breakdowns and providing reactive plant support.

Daily tasks may also include:
- Monitoring controls network infrastructure (servers, backups, database administration).
- Troubleshooting Ethernet/IP, Profibus, DeviceNet, and Omron FINS communication issues.
Key Skills & Experience
🔹 Formal Electronic/Controls qualification (e.g., Degree, HNC/HND, or equivalent training). 🔹 Hands-on PLC expertise:
- Experience with Rockwell Automation (Control Logix/CompactLogix) and Omron (CS1/CJ series).
- Proficiency in Studio 5000/RS Logix 5000 and CX-Programmer. 🔹 Experience with SCADA/HMI systems, including:
- Wonderware Intouch, Inductive Automation’s IGNITION, and Rockwell FactoryTalk. 🔹 Ability to commission, test, and maintain induction systems in live production environments. 🔹 Strong diagnostic skills for network communication protocols.

Work Environment
Mostly office-based but with occasional visits to pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical operational areas.
