Job Description

Assystem Energy & Infrastructure are recruiting for a Control Systems Engineer to join our team on a 12-month contract, working on-site at our customer’s facility in Derby. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in developing advanced engineering and test capabilities within a multi-disciplinary environment. You will contribute to the design of new production and experimental test facilities, help reduce costly breakdowns, and work collaboratively to improve the reliability and safety of plant, personnel and test processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and agree high-level functional and operational requirements, including testability
  • Design and implement complex control system solutions to meet defined requirements, constraints and standards
  • Work within a cross-disciplinary team to deliver solutions for new production and experimental test facilities
  • Software development: Write complex software modules from philosophy documents and modernise obsolete control systems
  • Hardware design: Develop detailed hardware designs from concept documents (e.g. P&IDs, equipment schedules) for new or upgraded installations
  • Identify and resolve issues during software and hardware integration testing, supporting commissioning activities
  • Prepare high-quality technical reports and documentation in line with engineering best practice
  • Act as technical support to the supply chain, assessing electrical and control components and managing design updates
  • Undertake project planning and control to ensure adherence to cost and schedule

Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree or equivalent professional accreditation in an engineering discipline (Controls, Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation or Software preferred)
  • Hands-on experience with industrial control systems and industrial IT/OT networks
  • Experience with Rockwell / Allen Bradley control systems is advantageous
  • Proven experience specifying and designing control system hardware, including I/O signal interfaces with instrumentation
  • Working knowledge of change and configuration management tools and processes
  • Experience using control system design tools such as AutoCAD Electrical and/or E-Plan
  • Ideally, experience across the full engineering product or project lifecycle (requirements through to disposal)
  • Broad understanding of relevant IEC standards (e.g. Machinery Directive, BS7671 IET Wiring Regulations, IEC 61131, IEC 61508/61511)

Personal Attributes

  • Proactive, self-starting and able to work effectively across multiple engineering disciplines
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills
  • Member of a professional engineering institution (e.g. The IET), ideally working towards Chartered Engineer status
