BoldShell is a specialist engineering consultancy delivering industrial automation, bespoke software and OT cyber security solutions for critical infrastructure clients across the UK.
We work across the full automation lifecycle, from software design and systems integration through testing, commissioning and ongoing support. Our projects span a range of industrial sectors, with particular expertise in gas networks and other critical national infrastructure (CNI).
As our business continues to grow, we're looking for an experienced Control Systems Engineer to join our team and help deliver technically challenging automation projects.
The Role
This is primarily a control systems engineering role with a strong software focus. You'll work throughout the project lifecycle, developing PLC and SCADA applications, supporting testing and commissioning activities, and working directly with clients to deliver practical engineering solutions.

Projects range from new control system development and software modifications to design reviews, testing, commissioning and technical consultancy. No two projects are the same, providing exposure to a broad range of technologies and engineering challenges.
The role is remote-first, with occasional travel to customer sites across the UK.
What You'll Do
- Design and develop PLC, SCADA and HMI software
- Produce technical documentation and participate in software design reviews
- Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) and commissioning activities
- Work directly with clients to understand requirements and deliver effective engineering solutions
- Use modern software tools and scripting where they add value to engineering projects
- Contribute to improving engineering standards and delivery practices
What You'll Bring
- Around five years' (or more) experience in industrial automation or control systems engineering
- Strong experience with major industrial automation platforms (e.g. Rockwell Automation, Siemens, Ignition).
- Experience delivering automation projects from design through commissioning
- An interest in modern software development practices. Experience with Python, Linux or container technologies would be an advantage
- A practical, problem-solving approach and good communication skills
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel when required
- Existing right to work in the UK

Desirable Skills
- Exposure to OT cyber security or functional safety
- Experience within gas, oil & gas, utilities or other industrial sectors
