Overview
The Control & Automation Engineer will be responsible for the design, development, implementation, and support of future, existing and legacy control systems across Armfield’s product range. The role combines hardware, software, and system integration expertise to deliver robust, user-friendly automation solutions for educational, research and industrial food technology products.
The ideal candidate will be experienced in specifying, designing and supporting systems using a range of technologies, examples of which could include PLCs, motor controllers, automation hardware, microprocessors & electronics, single-board computers or PC- or web-based software applications. This role requires knowledge of a range of system architectures, a methodical approach and excellent attention to detail. Experience working in a multi-disciplinary Engineering team and with other stakeholders in a manufacturing environment is also desirable.

- Design robust, compliant, and user-centred control and automation systems, software applications and user interfaces for new products.
- Coordinate with suppliers and subcontractors to ensure components, assemblies, firmware and software are specified to achieve the technical requirements.
- Carry out design work in accordance with Engineering and business processes, share progress updates and achieve results in accordance with the project, task, and technical objectives and customer expectations. Contribute to project and task plans, design reviews, seek and incorporate feedback.
- Consider the integration of components in their product context and work with other Engineering disciplines to ensure ease of integration, support and manufacture.
- Develop and maintain knowledge of the Armfield product portfolio – in particular assist with the cataloguing of controls systems documentation and software.
- Address technical issues and advise / troubleshoot as necessary for existing and legacy control systems from both internal and external stakeholders.
- Contribute to documentation, processes and compliance with appropriate standards.
- Stay updated on technology trends and new tools, frameworks, and platforms.

Skills and Experience
- Technical expertise in control systems such as interface hardware, PLCs, soft-PLCs, HMIs, experience of Codesys would be an advantage.
- Software skills in any of the following: Python, C, C#, HTML, JS, CSS, Structured Text along with an understanding of software revision control.
- Understanding of commercial aspects and manufacturing and assembly processes.
- Level 4/5 qualification in an appropriate discipline with some technical understanding of other disciplines.
- Strong appetite for technical innovation and a desire to try new ideas.
- Commitment to continuous improvement in Engineering and business processes.
