Controls Design Engineer – AWS Infrastructure Services (Data Center Global Services)
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking an exceptional Controls Design Engineer to join our Data Center Global Services (DCGS) Controls Design Engineering (CDE) team.
We’re AWS Infrastructure Services—the team that designs, plans, delivers, and operates all AWS global infrastructure. From data centers to servers, power, and cooling, we ensure customers have access to cutting-edge cloud solutions. This role focuses on developing Building Management System (BMS) and Electrical Power Monitoring System (EPMS) design standards across AWS’s global data center portfolio.
--- ## Core Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Standards Development
- Develop and maintain expertise in:
- Building operations, mechanical plant strategies, BMS/EPMS programming, control diagrams
- Industrial HVAC systems, electrical lineups, one-line diagrams, and complex environmental/electrical concepts
- Single Point of Failure (SPOF) analysis, energy/water conservation, and data reporting analytics
- Debate and mitigate technical risks, consolidate and promote best practices for AWS control systems
- Design, maintain, and own documentation of global standards including:
- Basis of Design (BOD) documents
- Controls Points Lists (CPLs)
- Scope of Work (SOW) templates and project-specific requirements
- Lead innovation projects to improve efficiency, reliability, and accessibility in control systems
Collaboration & Stakeholder Management
- Act as the central SME contact for BMS/EPMS systems across internal/external stakeholders, such as:
- Construction teams
- Controls programmers
- MEP/ACS engineers
- Design Engineering, Colocation Regional Engineering (CRE), and Project Managers
- Work with regional project managers to review and finalize project SOWs
- Prioritize and manage requests for information (RFIs) across:
- New builds (leased, owned, BTS/Colocation facilities)
- Legacy site upgrades/retrofits
- Data center support initiatives
- Special production projects

Vendor & Procurement Management
- Lead vendor selection processes, bid evaluations, and RM Coordinator engagement
- Review Modbus Device Templates for electrical meters/control devices (evaluate vendor compliance to AWS standards)
- Assess and pre-approve vendor submittals
- Drive cost optimization through standardization and vendor negotiations
Operations & Project Support
- Perform in high-security, mission-critical environments while maximizing productivity and safety
- Utilize AWS application ecosystem to analyze accumulated control system data
- Participate in on-call rotations for global data center control systems
- Global travel required (~25% of the time) to support projects, design reviews, and innovation initiatives
Continuous Improvement
- Drive design reviews to curate consistent control standards for all delivery modes
- Gather lessons learned and module revisions to refine global BMS systems
- Empower teams with risk awareness, ongoing compliance/assurance, and proactive action items
The Ideal Candidate
We seek Controls Design Engineers who are subject-matter experts in mechanical/electrical/datacom systems,了解 priorities, and catch problems early.
Must-Have Qualifications (Basic Experience)
✅ 4+ years of industrial/commercial engineering in mission-critical environments:
- Owned/leased data centers
- Power generation or oil & gas facilities ✅ 4+ years of hands-on experience with electrical/mechanical components:
- System installation, startup, or commissioning
- HVAC equipment, electrical generation, UPS, chillers, etc. ✅ Proficiency in:
- BMS/EPMS Sysjects (e.g., Siemens BuildingTech, Siemens EcoStruxure Compass)
- Control diagrams, electrical line-up diagrams, and database architecture
- SOx standards and emerging direct-air cooling trends ✅ Ability to test, deploy, and optimize building settings (very high-performance and technical requirements) ✅ Microsoft Office (Outstanding, Noted (e.g., Excel, PowerPoint)) ✅ Research new designs/technologies and improving methodologies relating to data center systems
Preferred Qualifications
✔ Professional Engineer (PE) License or technical business license ✔ Advanced knowledge of building codes and regional regulations ✔ Expertise carrying designs from concept to deployment ✔ Degree in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering or related field
