Purpose of the Role
The Controls Engineer designs, develops, and supports the control systems essential for the safe, reliable, and high-performance operation of our UV equipment, worldwide.
This hands-on role spans the entire controls engineering lifecycle—from system architecture and implementation to testing, commissioning, and problem resolution. Building on process and operational requirements, you will work alongside mechanical, electrical, and applications engineering to deliver PLC, HMI, and automation solutions.
You also contribute commercially by standardising controls, reducing commissioning complexity, and informing long-term product development and investment decisions, ultimately guiding our technological roadmap.

Key Responsibilities
Design & Development
- Develop and maintain products using Allen Bradley PLCs and alternative controllers, writing structured code in SCL, STL, and ladder logic.
- Design and refine HMI interfaces to ensure user-friendly, efficient control across diverse applications.
Integration & Support
- Support integration with customer SCADA systems and industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus).
- Implement dos and don’ts of controls engineering standards while ensuring alignment with industry best practices.
Project & Technical Leadership
- Deliver controls projects on schedule while contributing to factory testing, fault resolution, and system optimisation.
Collaboration
- Work closely with electrical, mechanical, and applications engineering to delivery seamless solutions.
- Assist in commissioning, site support, and troubleshooting control issues during project execution.
Documentation & Improvement
- Maintain clear, accurate software and test documentation to support ongoing product enhancements.
- Drive continuous improvement of standardised controls software and solutions by leveraging customer feedback.
Candidate Requirements
Mandatory
- Degree in a relevant engineering discipline OR equivalent practical experience in controls engineering.
- Proven expertise in PLC/HMI development, preferably using Allen Bradley technologies.
- Experience integrating systems with SCADA, Modbus, and industrial communication networks.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical/control schematics and apply technical standards.
- Skills in writing control philosophies, Functional Design Specifications (FDS), and User-Defined Function Blocks (UDFBs).
- Analytical troubleshooting and problem-solving approach tailored to industrial, project-based environments.
- Self-directed, capable of delivering tasks independently or collaboratively within a team.
- Organisational strength with the ability to manage competing deadlines while maintaining high standards.
- Hands-on mentality, adaptable, and eager to support factory testing, commissioning, and site activities when required.

Preferred
- Experience in embedded software/firmware development (e.g., C or C++).
- Familiarity with automated testing tooling or associated workflows.
- Knowledge of water treatment or process industries—especially UV disinfection systems.
- Experience with multidisciplinary engineering teams in manufacturing.
- Prior site involvement in commissioning or early operationalupport.
