Job Description: Control Systems Engineer

Role Overview

Authors advanced control systems designs that enable automated and integrated packaging solutions. Applies technical expertise to ensure systems perform reliably, integrate seamlessly, and align with project delivery requirements. Collaborates with teams across Project Management, Applications & Estimating, Operations, and Field Service to deliver control solutions that meet performance, reliability, and integration targets.

Key Responsibilities

Controls Design & Programming

  • Design and program control systems for conveyor systems and integrated packaging lines.
  • Develop PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers) and HMI (Human-Machine Interface) logic tailored to system requirements and integration standards.
  • Employ consistent architectures, reusable components, and standardised approaches where applicable.
  • Document all control logic, configurations, and system behaviour to support execution and startup phases.

System Integration & Startup Support

  • Prepare control systems for startup by verifying layouts, I/O connectivity, and system readiness.
  • Provide on-site support for system checkout, startup, and troubleshooting during field activities.
  • Validate device wiring, motor operation, and network communications.
  • Liaise with customers and third-party equipment suppliers to ensure seamless line integration and interlocking.
  • Execute program updates and adjustments as needed to stabilise system operation.

Technical Problem Solving

  • Identify and resolve control system issues using structured troubleshooting methods.
  • Offer technical support for electrical or integration challenges.
  • Apply sound judgment to restore system performance efficiently.
  • Support customer training on system functionality and operation when required.

Cross-Functional Coordination

  • Align control activities with project priorities and timelines in collaboration with Project Management.
  • Communicate effectively with internal teams, contractors, and OEM partners regarding controls requirements and site constraints.
  • Participate in project reviews, startup coordination meetings, and execution discussions.

Standards & Continuous Improvement

  • Adhere to established controls standards, procedures, and documentation practices.
  • Continuously identify efficacy opportunities in design efficiency, quality, and consistency.
  • Contribute lessons learned from execution and startup to enhance future control solutions.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Prefer a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • 5–10 years of experience designing and programming industrial control systems in automation or manufacturing environments.
  • Working knowledge of:
    • PLC and HMI platforms (e.g., Rockwell, Siemens, Allen-Bradley).
    • Industrial communication networks (Ethernet/IP, Profibus, Modbus, etc.).
  • Experience supporting systems through installation, startup, and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects across diverse site environments.
  • Strong communicator with experience collaborating across engineering, operations, and project teams.
  • Proven flexibility to adapt to evolving responsibilities and strategic priorities.
