Reporting to the Director of Culinary Services or Dietary Manager
The Cook is responsible for the preparation and delivery of all foods for residents, guests, and employees in a healthcare or retirement setting.
Key Responsibilities
- To prepare and/or oversee the preparation and delivery of all foods for residents, guests, and employees
- To review menus and production sheets before meal preparation and ensure meals are served properly and attractively
- To adhere to proper food handling techniques, including safety and hygiene standards
- To conduct daily temperature audits for fridges, freezers, and storerooms, recording findings accurately
- To prepare and serve therapeutic and specialty diets as scheduled by the department
- To make necessary menu substitutions and document them clearly
- To stay within time schedules for meal and nourishment service
- To follow daily production charts, standardized recipes, and budget constraints
- To comply with all provincial/municipal regulations and dietary department policies
- To actively participate in planning and preparing special occasion and theme meal days
- To attend department meetings, staff training sessions, and in-services
- To uphold Resident Rights & Responsibilities in all interactions
- To contribute to the Quality Improvement Program
- To comply with health and safety legislation and all departmental safe job procedures
- To work with vulnerable adults (residents) in a role of trust
- To promote the organization’s values of ethics, morality, and integrity as outlined in Extendicare’s Code of Conduct
- To complete additional tasks as assigned

Qualifications
Must possess:
- A Food Handler’s Certificate (mandatory)
- A Red Seal Certificate (preferred but not mandatory)
- Experience in large-quantity food preparation, ideally within a healthcare or retirement setting
- Knowledge of Provincial Food Premises Regulation and Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating
- Familiarity with therapeutic and special diets (dietary requirements, adjustments)
- Physical ability to lift/transfer hot/heavy items and stand for the majority of the shift
- Bilingual proficiency (an asset)
- A complete and current (within six months) Vulnerable Sector Check (including a Criminal Background Check), or a willingness to obtain one
