Coroner’s Officer – 3 Vacancies
The starting salary for these full-time, permanent roles is £38,090 per annum based on a 36-hour working week, plus an on-call allowance.
About the Role
We are recruiting for 3 new Coroner’s Officers to join our exceptional team based in Woking. As a Coroner’s Officer, you will play a crucial role in supporting the Senior Coroner to deliver judicial duties—helping bereaved families through investigations with compassion, efficiency, and professionalism.
This role allows you to make a real difference in the community by investigating deaths to prevent avoidable tragedies and ensuring families receive the highest level of support during difficult times.
Key Responsibilities
- Be the primary support for bereaved families, providing regular updates and guidance.
- Assist the Coroner in conducting thorough investigations and maintain a 24/7, 365-day on-call service.
- Attend incident/scene investigations, post-mortems, and gather pivotal evidence to inform inquest proceedings.
- Manage caseloads from referral through to conclusion, ensuring timely and thorough follow-up.
- Collaborate closely with medical professionals, police, pathologists, and other key partners.
- Ensure compliance with legal and procedural requirements while delivering a client-focused service.
About You
We are looking for individuals who can:
- Work efficiently under pressure while maintaining emotional resilience.
- Demonstrate strong communication skills, especially when dealing with sensitivity and trauma.
- Show customer service excellence, empathy, and adaptability when engaging with diverse audiences.
- Travel across Surrey as part of the role—willingness and ability to respond quickly and effectively when called.
- Prepare clear, structured, and legally sound reports from multiple sources.

Requirements & Application Process
Minimum Eligibility
To be considered for shortlisting, you must clearly demonstrate:
- Experience in a coronial service, police, legal, or regulatory profession (or equivalent investigatory role).
- Analytical skills to contribute effectively to death investigations.
- Excellent customer service and emotional intelligence when dealing with distressed individuals.
- Strong report-writing ability, collating evidence from multiple sources.
- Proficient IT skills and the capacity to adhere to established protocols.
- Fitness to fulfil on-call duties, including travel across Surrey when required.

Local Government Reorganisation
As part of Surrey County Council’s transition to new unitary councils in April 2027, this role will transfer to one of these with maintained pay and conditions.
